"Why the hell are you tutoring Nate!" Bailey shrieks just as she sees me enter the kitchen. She's already dressed for school and has her rollers from last night in her hair. She is pouring her "green goddess" smoothie she drinks every morning because she insists if she doesn't drink it her immune system will get backed up and she won't be able to eat for a week. My parents have tried to tell her that celery, lemon juice, kale, and orange juice can't clear your immune system but she won't listen. She sets a metal straw into her cup and takes a big sip as she finally looks up at me. "Well?" She presses.
"It just happened?" I shrug it off. I grab a cup from the cabinet and the orange juice off the counter and pour myself a glass.
"That doesn't just happen Bria. I don't like Nate sitting in your room with you for two hours."
"Why does it matter anyways." I ask her.
"Because I know Nate and he doesn't just sit in a room with a girl and study." She sets her drink down.
"Well He did last night, and he will on Thursday when he comes over again." I finish off my glass and set it into the sink before I walk back into my room.
I get it, Nate's in her friend group. Nate's known. I'm doing this to be nice, and to hangout with a guy. Maybe it'll get my mind off of Grant. He's funny and hot and I guess he's okay company.
We don't discuss Nate on the way to school. As soon as she parked I hopped out and got into Avery's car and proceeded to tell her all about last night. Since we agreed to meet up again on Thursday that meant I had time to plan and try to get him to learn as much as possible in little time.
I passed Nate twice today, both times he smiled. That was it though, not a "hey what's up" or a wave. I guess a smile is more than I got last week but I've spent probably six hours with the kid one on one. The day was slow, Grant wasn't at school today which meant he wasn't at class or rehearsals.
That's how the rest of the week carried out. Grant got the flu and missed three days of school. Thursday tutoring with Nate was short and quick and surprisingly no food breaks. Once we finally exchanged numbers that's when we got more comfortable, not that it's not awkward but it's better.
He'll ask me about questions about science and history, and then if I don't know the answer he'll ask me to look it up, probably one of the laziest but hardest workers I've ever met.
In the past weeks we've worked together we've learned more about each other and even had one of our sessions in a Starbucks instead of my bedroom. When my parents got home they definitely questioned it. Bailey was no help, especially since she told them he was one of her friends and not a good influence. Once I argued the fact she gets to have Logan over and in her bedroom they couldn't disagree.
Life carried on like that for the next couple of weeks. School, rehearsals, tutoring, repeat. Nate's grades saw slight improvement but not as much as he needs to play. Meaning we have a month to get his grade up before the first scrimmage against another school.
