Outside of the door, there is a commotion of angry voices and the sound of dogs barking. On what should have been a calm and pitched black night, there was an orange glow in the distance. Multiple orange glows, getting closer to the home.
"Get on out here Adelaide!"
The banging on the door woke those inside of the small cabin, after waiting for a while the man pounded on the door once more before he decided to kick it in.
"Get out here Addie!"
The gruff man pulled the young woman out of her bed, snatching her away from the children that were in the same bed as her. He pulled her roughly outside and threw her to the ground with his eyes blazed with fire.
"Did you do it?"
"Do what Mr. Whitter?"
"Don't play with me girl, my wife's in there sick and coughing up blood."
The woman snatched her arm back from his grip, she looked into his eyes and saw pure rage.
"What does that have to do with me sir? I told you she was sick and you don't listen."
Mr. Whitter pulled Adelaide by the collar of her nightgown and pulled her to her feet. Their eyes make direct contact. The scowl on his face would make a normal person shiver in fear, but not Adelaide.
"I know you dunnit, the townspeople were right about ya. You ain't nothing but a witch."
Adelaide removed his hands from her collar, her chest rising and falling with the sharp intake of breath. Her head turned to the side of her children watching her.
"You gon' treat me like this in front of my babies?"
"Like what? You're the one who is poisoning my wife."
Adelaide stood in front of her children blocking Mr. Whitter's view, her small hands balled into a fist and feet planted firmly into the ground.
"Now Mr. Whitter, I done told you time and time again your wife, she sick ya hear."
"You put a hex on her and you expect me to not retaliate."
"You would rather point your dutty [dirty] fingers than learn the truth."
"We know everything Adelaide, how do you expect us to trust you?"
"Now sir, I have served this dotish [stupid] family for so long. I think I deserve more respect."
"Respect? Watch your mouth girl."
Adelaide could hear the slight whimper from her youngest child, her senses now on edge. The hair on her arms and the back of her neck stood up. The wind in the area started to slightly pick up and clouds rolled in.
"Delphine, take ya sister back in the house."
"Oh no, you don't. Connor take them girls back up to the house."
"Don't you dare touch my children, I'll strike you down where you stand."
The man named Connor treaded slowly toward the girls, while also keeping an eye on their mother. The young girls clung to each other tighter with a slight tremble.
"Delphine, June, courez! [run]"
The girls immediately made a run for the tree line with Connor and the dogs hot on their trail.
"Now I done told you Mr. Whitter, you touch my girls, I'll end you myself."
She sauntered closer to him.
