Summary: Brainy says that Nia will always be with him, and the words are familiar to Kara, much too familiar. It's not fair.

"Hey."

Kara glanced over as J'onn joined her against the wall outside the bar. "Hey," she answered.

"Want to talk about it?" he asked softly.

Kara played dumb. "About what?"

J'onn gave her a knowing look. "I sensed your mind in distress when you heard Brainy and Nia talking. What happened?"

Kara tried to deflect the question. "I thought you couldn't read my mind."

"No, but I can sense your emotions. What's going on?"

Kara sighed in resignation. No hiding from Papa Bear. "What Brainy said to Nia, it just reminded me of...something Mon-El told me before he left."

Wherever I go, I'm gonna be better because of you. You'll be in my heart.

"Is that all?" J'onn prompted gently.

Kara bit her lip. "I don't want her to end up like me," she said finally, turning back to face the night sky.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning I was in love once, okay? And he left."

She swallowed hard, her heart twinging in remembrance of the old pain. "And I just can't move on. Because no matter what, I know I'm never gonna find another person like that–someone who gets me in every way possible."

Seeing you and Lucy makes me think that I am never gonna have what you two have. Someone who knows everything about me...my perfect partner at a game night.

Kara continued, "So I've accepted that for the rest of my life, I'm gonna be alone." She spoke as someone who, as much as they tried to convince themselves, didn't quite believe their words, or at least hoped they weren't true. Judging by J'onn's expression, he could tell.

"And that's okay! That's fine. But Nia..." she trailed off. "She's strong and kind and she deserves to spend the rest of her life with someone who loves her as much as Brainy does."

Kara finally faced her friend, whose face held a mixture of sadness and understanding.

"People like that shouldn't have to separate."

J'onn gave her a sad smile and rubbed her shoulder. Together they gazed up at the stars, thinking about faraway happiness and tragic endings. It was a while before J'onn spoke.

"For the record," he said softly, "You deserve to be loved too."
