We got home and crashed on the couch not even bothering to put our luggage in the bedroom. This was why we didn't usually drink and definitely not the amount we drank last night in celebration. We were both lightweights. We knew it and were fine with it usually.
Neither of us said anything as we got settled in. Chet sprawled out so his back was over the seat cushions. He spread his legs on top of mine. I placed an arm over them and then grabbed the remote to turn on the t.v. I found something mindless to watch.
About a half hour later, our doorbell rang. "Come in," Chet called out. Neither of us moved. Nat and Nate were supposed to bring Goldie back so we assumed it was them.
"The door's locked," Nate said from the other side.
"You have the means to unlock it," Chet called back.
A few moments later, the door opened and Goldie came running in. Chet and I finally moved. We stood as Goldie whined and bumped our legs excitedly. We both bent to shower her with love and affection. She licked our cheeks and smiled happily as we pet her.
"Congratulations, son," Nate said as he came to stand by us. He had a bag in one hand that I suspected was food before the smell hit me to confirm it. Chet stood up straight as Nate hugged him with one arm.
"Thanks, dad," Chet said as he returned the hug.
"I made lasagna. Are you two hungry?" Nate asked.
"Starving," Chet said.
Nate took the bag into the kitchen and began to pull things out of it. The first item he pulled out was garlic bread, then a caesar salad and finally the lasagna. Goldie stayed by his side knowing he had food. But sometimes she would run back to where Chet and I had collapsed on the couch again to get more love before returning to Nate hoping for some food. He knew where her treats were so he gave her one before he dished up food for me and Chet and placed the plates on the table.
"Are you going to join us?" Chet asked. We got up and went to the table.
"Your mom is waiting for me," he said. "I should get going."
"Thanks for taking care of Goldie for us," I said.
"Anytime," he said. Then he hugged Chet and said, "Goodbye, son."
"Bye, dad." Chet's eyes were solely on the food.
"Bye, son," Nate said as he hugged me.
"Bye, dad," I said. We smiled at each other before he headed to the door.
"Bye, Goldie," he called from the door.
Her head turned to look at him before turning her attention back to us and the food. Nate left and Chet and I devoured the food he left us. We even had second helpings.
When we finished, Chet finally took our luggage into the bedroom while I washed the dishes and put away the leftover food.
We met back on the couch. Goldie got up on the couch and settled between us. There really hadn't been room for her, but she forced herself into the space anyway. We let her.
Goldie fell asleep first. Chet followed and I was quickly following. I wasn't sure how long we slept for, but my ringing phone startled me awake. Aiden's name came up on the screen.
"Hello," I answered quietly. I moved to get up so I wouldn't disturb Chet, but one quick glance confirmed he was now awake and looking at me with curiosity. I settled back on the couch.
