27: Falling Up

KAI POV

An hour have passed, I finally made it home.

Si Ginger ang unang sumalubong sa akin, "You're back, Kai. I was worried sick."

"Si Roger?" agad kong tanong.

She frowned, "Sa office."

"Thanks," I said. Humakbang na ako paalis but she swiftly blocked my path.

"I'm warning you, Kai. Don't tell him things you would regret again later. Kakalabas lang niya ng hospital," she reminded me. "And this is all your fault by the way. Whatever the reason you're angry, you pushed Spence to the wall that he had to make an idiotic decision."

"Shut up," I said. "Don't tell me things I already know."

Tinaasan lang niya ako ng kilay.

Nagmamadali ko siyang iniwan at baka lalo lang akong maasar. Hindi ko alam kung specialty ba talaga niya ang inisin ako.

Pagdating kong home office ni Roger, nakabukas lang ang pinto kaya tuloy-tuloy akong pumasok. He was sitting in his swivel chair, with the nurse standing beside him and giving him some kind of medicine.

When he noticed me, pinaalis niya kaagad ang nurse. I clenched both my fists and took deep breaths thrice para pakalmahin ang sarili.

Then I heard my pops' weak voice, "Come closer son."

Lumapit naman ako sa kanya. "Tell me it's a joke," bungad ko sa kanya.

"Joke?" nagtataka niyang tanong.

"Spence's new fiancee? Don't you know?"

It didn't took him a second to answer, "Ah! Pia. Pia Rivera.." he said with a smile.

Tumaas ang tono ng boses ko, "So you do know her! And it seems you already approved?"

"Of course," mabilis niyang sagot. "Even their wedding date has been set already."

"Why would you do that? What were you thinking?" sunud-sunod kong tanong. I was sure of what I heard sa hospital, "I.. I thought you wanted him to marry Ginger?" I asked at last.

Pinatong niya ang magkabilang kamay sa armchair at saka sumandal sa upuan, "Gusto mo ba talagang malaman kung ano ang nasa isip ko?"

"Kaya nga tinatanong kita, di ba?" sagot ko naman.

"But what difference would it make if I tell you?" he asked me back. "That wouldn't make him marry the woman I want for him. And neither will you."

Hindi ko pinansin ang huli niyang sinabi. I'm so tired of that shit. "Pops, everyone in CCM knows that Pia is in love with another guy. I won't accept her. Please, stop this engagement shenanigan for all of our sake!"

"Well guess what," he responded with a husky cold voice, "it's not for you to decide, Kadence Isaac."

I gritted my teeth, "Do you really care about your sons or you just care about your damn business?"

Roger stayed calm, which was very disturbing. Or maybe it was because of his meds. "Son, before you worry about your brother's woman, why don't you focus on your own woman instead?"

I gave him a dry laugh, "Haha. You really are persistent, aren't you?"

Huminga muna siya ng malalim bago muling nagsalita. "Look, I didn't call you here just so we can argue about Spence's fiancee. I meant to speak to you about sister."

Kumunot ang noo ko, "Who?"

"You heard me," he said. He then picked up a black folder plate holder and threw it towards me. "I couldn't care less why you do not like Pia when there is no guarantee you will even attend their wedding. So, there is no sense talking about it."
