Gavin knew how this would end as soon as he figured out Gia's secret.

There was no way, no way in hell it could go any other way; heartbreak was the only plausible ending. He was dating a ghost - a fucking dead girl - and he was nearly in love with her despite only having her for a few weeks. But she had to pass on. It wasn't personal, but she was gonna leave him forever, and it would sure as hell hurt worse than even the messiest of breakups.

So even as he was dancing with his near-perfect girlfriend at prom, Gavin couldn't help but let these thoughts swarm his mind. He enjoyed the night, of course, making as much eye contact with Gia as possible and trying to commit every part of her to his long-term memory. They laughed and talked together endlessly. But there was a nagging thought in the back of his mind constantly reminding him that by the time the after-party began, Gia would be gone.
