We spent the rest of our day on our date. It was a surprise from Cye to me. He walked me all around his home as if it were still the Nelson Art Museum. He was my own private tour guide telling me stories of how he knew some of the painters and sculptors. I held on to his arm as we walked listening to every word he had to say. He was so beautiful. His stories, his history the things he has seen. To think he is thousands of years old and has been alone this long. I guess I never really asked about all his past relationships. He just said he spent years searching for me.
"Cye, in all this time you were never married before?"
He stopped talking turning to look at me. There was sadness behind his eyes.
"What is it? You can tell me anything."
"I was, I was married a long time ago."
"What happened?"
We walked a little further to the Mercy Brown room. His families room. Flashes of the first night I met him came rushing back to me. I felt a warm sweat breaking out thinking of his lips when he first spoke to me that night.
"I'm sure you know the story of my mother Mercy Brown. The wicked vampire of the east coast." He let out a little spooky giggle.
I rolled my eyes knowing the story we had heard but I wanted to truth.
"Ok, ok, my mother became a vampire because she came down with consumption. At first it was simply an illness. She explained it as a great beast with the thirst for blood that builds in your belly. She couldn't control it at first, that's why she killed her entire family. When she went into the death phase of changing that's when they buried her and my mother's family. The entire town knew she was the last one left alive. So, three nights after burying her they dug her up and tried to cut out her heart. Now, history will tell you they did and that she is dead. She's not."
"I'm sorry what did you say?"
"She is alive and well. She knew they would come for her. When they did, her thirst was more than she could contain. She killed seven grown men and buried them in her grave then left town that same evening. My mother met my father here in Kansas City and had my sister and myself."
"What does this have to do with your late wife?"
"Because my mother killed her. I killed her."
"You aren't making any sense Cye."
"My wife was human. I was out one evening for work. She was attacked by a group of men who raped her and left her for dead. They had been watching our home and knew when I was gone, it was my fault. I came home to the house on fire and her laying in the middle of it half dead. She begged me to save her by biting her. I couldn't do it; I never wanted this life for her. My mother came swiftly to my home when she saw the flames and took her life in exchange for this one. They both sought revenge on the men. After that I could never look upon her again."
"So, your mother and your ex are out there somewhere, and you never thought to bring this up until now? Kind of fucking important when people are dying and blaming you. OH, and threatening, me."
"They are no threat to us now Lumi. You are the biggest threat to all of our kind. I loved my ex, Samara but changing her was the for the worst. She became evil."
My heart felt like it was going to explode. Fuck it, maybe it already did. I had only heard stories of Samara the evil bitch who killed everyone and anything in her path. She was a blood hungry whore. I had no idea how far down the rabbit hole I had really gone falling in love with Cye.
"Breathe Lumi, she can't touch us. Come look at family pictures."
We walked in silence as I gazed upon the pictures of Cye's past. Each picture giving me a glimpse of his life. I wanted to know it all. I wanted him, but I didn't know if I was prepared for all the baggage. If there was ever a time I missed my family, it was now. As we walked further along, we came across a picture of Cye and his entire family. Cye was holding onto Samara smiling as her long black hair was blowing in the wind. She was beautiful, vaguely familiar, but when you've seen one fucking vamp girl you've seen them all. We kept walking past the statue of his mother. I couldn't get the dead girl out of my head, but I kept it to myself. Cye was busy chatting about the party he was going to throw in two days to announce me to the community, meaning vampires.
