The stillness of purgatory, deafened a soul's ears. The ears of a small child. He laid on a wooden, seemingly new dock. A whisper of a small gust entered his small, transparent, ears. His eyes slowly opened to see a kind elderly woman's sprit standing over him with worried eyes.
"Are you alright kiddo?" The woman's accent was strong. She knelt down as the child sat up. His small bony stature was covered by an oversized hoodie. His eyes traced the horizon then met back with the woman's. "Kiddo?"
He tilted his head seeing the roof of a building through her. "Who?" He paused, "what are you?" His minuscule voice had a confused and dazed tone.
"Well my names Betty. What's your name?"
The boy thought for a second, "Cole. I think." He looked at his hands seeing through them, "what happened? What are we?" He looked up at Betty, his mind fuzzy.
"Well, Cole, that is a difficult question to answer. Why don't we go to my house and talk more?" Betty stood up and held out her hand for Cole to grab. He nodded and took her hand, cautiously. Betty smiled gently holding his hand. Cole stood up and faced away from the dock to the bright lights of a compact small town. Betty stepped forward, Cole attached to her hip. Souls walked the narrow streets. Most having a blank or saddened expression.
The torches where bright and gave off a warm glow, contrasting to the dark, dreary, cold sky. Betty came to a wooden door twisting the handle. The door creaked open to show a warm comfortable home. The door lead straight into a cozy living room with a couch and chair near a desk with a broken, unused, sewing machine. A small stair case behind the couch lead upstairs. Off of the living room was a white kitchen with a big wooden table and four chairs set around it. The countertops were newly cleaned.
Betty lead Cole to the couch. He jumped up onto it pushing his hand down into the couch testing the firmness. Betty sat on the chair. "Well, Cole, this is my cozy little home. You can stay here as long as you want." She gave a warm smile.
Cole's mouth formed into a small smile but quickly turned back into a frown, "Where are we?"
"Well, it's called Purgatory, this village is a place for all the lost souls who come to Purgatory."
"Lost souls?"
"Souls who can't move on to their afterlife due to...well, many reasons. It's different for every soul." Betty looked over at the broken sewing machine, "I'm waiting for my husband. Do you know why you're hear, Cole?"
Cole furrowed his brows trying to remember. His face rested into a defeated look, "I can't remember. I can't remember anything."
"Well, you remembered your name so at least that's something."
"I don't know if it really is my name. It's just a name I remember."
"Well, until you remember, would you like me to keep calling you Cole?"
He nodded.
Betty smiled, "Alrighty than. There is two beds up those stairs. You can take either one. Though, souls don't need to sleep, you can still relax on it, if you'd like." Betty stood up from the chair. "Well, you make yourself comfortable. I need to leave for a while. But I'll be back, so don't you worry about a thing, alright dear?"
Cole shifted on the couch to get comfortable and nodded smiling. "Thanks Betty!" He bounced slightly on the couch.
Betty smiled and left the house gently closing the door behind her.
