The dark gray kit blinked as he awoke to faint pawsteps and then two thumps. "Eh...?"
A gray she padded up to him. "Go back to sleep, Smokekit."
"I'm not sleepy, I was just sleeping." Smokekit could see that she was blocking something from his view by laying down in front of him. He tried peeking around her, but she kept nudging him back towards his spot. "Pleaase!"
The gray she sighed and uncurled her tail to reveal two kits, both looking older than Smokekit and another, golden she-kit who lay beside him. Still, they weren't as big as the white and gray she who was almost an apprentice and lay by the entrance to the nursery.
"This is Sunkit and Sparkkit." The gray she kept her voice low. "Be nice to them."
"Where did they come from?" Smokekit whispered, eyes widening.
"We're not sure." The gray she sighed. "We found them by the thunderpath. Their mother was nowhere to be found and Sunkit was guarding Sparkkit."
Sunkit stared at Smokekit with wide eyes. He barred his little teeth. "Grr! Stay away!"
Smokekit blinked. "Are you Sunkit?"
He tipped his head to the side. "I think so."
"I'm Smokekit." Smokekit glanced back. "Over there is my sister, Honeykit, and that's Ivykit."
Sunkit blinked. "This is my sister. I think they named her Sparkkit."
Smokekit blinked. "You must've been really brave, to guard her."
"Y-Yeah!" Sunkit puffed out his chest. "I fought a whole badger! It was huge!"
"A whole badger?" Smokekit's eyes widened. He'd heard loads of scary stories about badgers. "Were you scared?"
"Not at all." Sunkit mewed proudly. "I fought it off and protected Sparkkit! She was sleeping."
"Wow." Smokekit found himself yawning. "I'm sleepy..."
"I'm not." Sunkit boasted. He then yawned. "Er...alright. Maybe I am. But only a little teeny bit."
Smokekit nodded and curled up beside Honeykit, slowly falling asleep,
