Here is some background info about the OC used. This about my character Topaz, she's a human witch that can transform into a mermaid. She is currently in her late teens between 16-18(I haven't settled on an exact age yet, sorry); when she was younger a potion of hers blew up affecting her right side(in the drawing and if you're facing her front). As you can see she has burn marks covering her whole side; the hair on said side is also close to the scalp, this is because the potion burned away the majority of her hair on that side and made it unable to grow back. The potion also infused some power into her side changing her eye color. Topaz is shy and reserved, she's very self conscious of her scars and she doesn't like interacting with other people because of them. She would much rather spend time with working potions than people. I'll add some photos of her drawn by me.

Below is where the story starts.

Topaz was going back to school after a break in the ocean. She had enjoyed the break and was happy to see the other merfolk again. School didn't really allow for her to visit them much, but it did allow for her to learn from the local witches. The school she went to was a human school, so it would at least allow for Topaz to understand humans and live around them if necessary. And while Topaz wasn't looking forward to the boring school day ahead, it was nice being back on land again. Thankfully she lived near the school and could just walk to and from school. 'Well at least I have some spell lessons this evening to look forward to,' Topaz thought to herself. With that thought in mind she entered the school and headed off to her classes.

Topaz was walking to her apartment after school, when she heard a noise.

"Meow"

It sounded like a cat, but it didn't sound right. Topaz followed the noise into an alleyway, watching carefully and reaching out with her magic she found a cat. The cat was pitch black with glowing green eyes, staring at her. It was laying on the ground in a heap, with its fur matted and a strange puddle beneath it. With the dim lighting it was hard to tell but the puddle looked too close to blood for Topaz's comfort. After managing to calm the cat enough to pick it up, Topaz started carrying it to her spell teacher's place. She hoped they would be able to help the cat more than Topaz could. Sometime later after the cat had been cleaned up, they started patching it up.

"You'll have to nurse it back to health yourself, Topaz. There's not much magical healing that can be done without harming the cat." Topaz's spell teacher said.

"Okay, but can I bring it to you for regular checkups?" Topaz asked.

"Yes, that should be fine...Do you sense something odd about the cat?" queried the spell teacher.

"It does not feel strong, at least not strong enough to worry." answered Topaz.

"Ah yes, you are correct. You should probably be getting home, it is getting late. Warm milk and a blanket should be fine for now until you can get other supplies." suggested the spell teacher.

"Right. Thanks again, and I'll see you soon." responded Topaz. And with that she gathered up the cat and headed home. Weeks later Topaz would come to find that she bonded with the cat and now had her familiar.

I hope you enjoyed reading my short story. I'd like to point out that I'm the furthest thing from a professional writer as you can get and am doing this for fun. Because of that I'm open to any suggestions on how to improve my writing. Thanks for reading, hope you have a wonderful rest of your day or night. - SilentFox
