Chapter One

My alarm clock went off and I slapped the button to make it stop beeping. I was so not looking forward to today.

I looked around my barren room. Everything was packed in boxes except for my bed and a few essentials needed for today. Moving day.

With a sigh I heaved myself out of the bed. The sunlight that filtered in through the window burned my eyes. Ugh. Mornings were so not my thing.

I got dressed in the clothes I had waiting on the hardwood floor that was no longer mine. Once I was dressed I ran the brush through my hair and went to the bathroom to bruch my teeth.

The spearamint toothpaste comforted me. I loved spearamint toothpaste. And gum. I loved spearamint in general.

After I had brushed my teeth I went back to my room and took in everything. I hated seeing my room like this. All my posters and pictures off the walls. The black paint was faded where it had been exposed to the sunlight. My long, scarlet curtains no longer hung and covered the large floor length windows.

I sat at the window and leaned my head against one of the cool panes. I really didn't want to move. I'd miss my friends too much. What would I do without them? My cousins would be out of reach too. Sadness washed over me and a tear fell from my eye. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do this.

"Cassie!" My mom yelled up the stairs. "Hurry up and bring those last boxes down!" I quickly scrubbed the tears from my eyes.

"I'm coming, Mom!" I unplugged my alarm clock and threw it into a box. My hair brush and tooth brush both went into my travel case which went into the box.

I stole one last look at my big windows and saved the picture in my memories. The bright green leaves covering the huge tree right out my window. Wildflowers dotting the lawn interrupting the sea of green at irregular intervals.

I picked up my box along with another taller one and carried them down the stairs. "Mom? Where do you want these?"

"In the truck, Cassie." she called from the other room.

"Kay." Carefully I opened the door and hitched it open with my hip. With a bump I opened the door a bit farther then scurried out before the screen door could catch me.

"Dad?" I called.

"What do you need, Monkey?" I heard my Dad call. It was hard to see over the boxes in my hands.

"Help would be greatly appreciated." I said, almost dropping my boxes when I tripped on a rock.

"Coming!" He grabbed the top box and carried it into the truck. I followed him with my other box. "How many more do you have?"

"Boxes?" He nodded. "Two." I said with an exaggerated sigh.

"Come on. I'll help you."

"Thank you, Daddy." I gave a smile.

"Where's Brian?"

"I don't know. Sleeping?"

Dad and I walked back into the house. I went to my room and Dad went to Brian's. From upstairs I could hear, "Get up!" Pause. "Take these boxes out to the moving truck and get the rest of your stuff packed up! You were supposed to be packed yesterday..."

I heard a thump, probably Brian rolling out of bed. A little later Dad came up and grabbed the heavier of my two boxes. I picked up the last box and sighed. This was really it...

When all of boxes were in the truck Mom and Dad went about putting all the rest of the furniture in the moving truck. I was banished from trying to help. The only things left out were just a few of the essentials we had needed for the night and morning.

Too soon they were done and I was left standing in the hall of our empty house. It was hard to call it a "house" and not "home" like I was so used to. Standing in it, devoid of any furniture or pictures it didn't feel like a home. It felt like an empty shell. It felt like a house.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned my head to see Brian looking around. "Hard to believe, huh?" I looked at him, confused. "We're actually moving out. Come on, Cass. We'd better go..."

With a sigh I walked out of my childhood home and into the moving truck. Dad started it up and Mom started the old Ford. We pulled out of the drive way and started our trip to our new house.
