Robert and Cora stepped outside. Cora was quiet and felt sick as she looked at the sun shining and heard the birds singing. Robert put on his hat and took her hand in his. She almost shook him off but after listening to Clarkson she didn't feel as though she should. For a while the only sounds were the birds, the wind blowing, and their footsteps on the gravel path up to the house.
Why Violet felt the need to put the doctor on the spot, she didn't know. He looked as horrible as she felt when he spoke and wondered if he'd bee forced to lie by her mother in law. She could be quite persuadable when she wanted to be. he may have had to. She wouldn't blame him if that were the case. As it was, the man had been subjected to insults and had his life's work questioned, Made to feel inferior under Sir Tapsell. She would not recommend him to anyone in the future.
"The pain and uncertainty of surgery would have been all to real." Cora pressed her palms into her eyes as a headache formed. She cried out, dropping to her knees and sobbed
Robert was lost in thought trying to figure out what to say to Cora after that awkward, for Clarkson no doubt, conversation when she cried out and fell to her knees. "Cora!"
He knelt next to her but she wouldn't let him near her and just laid on the ground. "Cora, say something! Please, my darling."
"Just kill me, Robert!"
