We all have a set path before us the moment we are born and only we can walk down the one put upon us. Whether it be for the better or the worse, we are to continue on forward acknowledging where we are and where we are meant to be. A step at a time and the world shall go a bit slower but taking a leap it shall throw us into the future. We design the future we wish to see and if we try hard enough; we can achieve anything or that is what I used to believe.

1,000 years ago, there was a grand war between the main countries. No individual could be trusted. It was the cruelest war that had devastated our planet. Out of the rubble of the devastation one person came forward and with their words brought together 9 people. As a collective, they were the light during dark times and with their knowledge in multiple fields they were able to make a new standing government, one that united the people.

It consisted of:
The Divine
The Counselor of Security
The Counselor of Agriculture
The Counselor of Technology
The Counselor of Education
The Counselor of History
The Counselor of Ecology
The Counselor of Health
The Counselor of Religion
The Counselor of Economy

Together they were able to rebuild everything and although they had to restart, they never gave up and pushed forward, making the society we know now. As years went by, they got older and decided every 60 years all who turn 18 that year will have to take an exam. Then depending on their knowledge of a certain topic, they will be put into classes and be monitored for 5 years while learning the field of their choosing. With a special section for The Divine, for they had to take all the courses. The only catch would be once you had chosen what you would be studying, you could no longer change it. Anyone could take the places, gender and sexuality were not an issue. When the 5 years are up, 2 students with the highest grades from each section will be chosen, except in the case of The Divine. The work load to support an entire country can be hard on one person so that is why they had chosen to pick two people so that the work was divided, they were on equal footings. This year was when the new candidates were being chosen and it was during my lifetime.

It is the last day of December, everything is still sleeping, including the sun. I wake up three hours early and jump out of my warm bed to see the stars and moon still out. It may sound insane but today I turn 18. I have been dreaming of this moment the first time I heard the stories from my grandfather. My dream of being part of the ecology field was beyond exciting. I loved the land with all of my being, I had purchased so many books that the townspeople had to build an extra part to the house just to store my precious books. If that didn't show how much I wanted to be part of that field, I am not sure what else could.

I quietly crept down the stairs trying to avoid that one loud step, so that I can open the letter that they had sent yesterday with my ID for the exam, but to no avail it somehow creaks and I hear a weathered but sweet voice come from the kitchen, " Mia, is that you? Why are you awake so early in the morning dear?" I jumped over the last step and ran to the kitchen in my knitted green socks. When I see my grandmother, I burst out laughing, she is covered in flour there was even some in her braided dust colored long hair. She laughs along with me and motions for me to get closer and says," What are you giggling a wind about? Do you not like my new style? According to everyone in town it is the new look, you should try it." After saying that she sprinkles some in my black long hair and I gasp. I look at her in disbelief and she starts laughing. Any sound that comes out of my grandmother was always gentle even when she laughed and soon enough, I was laughing along. Suddenly, another laugh is heard and it startles us; it belongs to my grandfather. He comes in covered in mud, while holding a basket of eggs and a milk jar and places it on the counter. He kisses my grandmother and slowly walks my way, I try to dodge him so that I don't get dirty, but he catches me and embraces me with the biggest hug and I groan. I am now dirty with mud and flour and when I didn't think it could get any worse my grandmother rushes over and throws flour all over us and giggles while saying, " Now you look like a powdered chocolate cake!" This makes us all laugh.
