I peeked out of my window, checking to see if I could see anything.  All I can see is the snow falling and the bodies on the ground.  The sound of sirens and gun fire off in the distance.  It’s been 3 days now since the outbreak.  I can’t even begin to explain how terrified I am.  Let me start from the beginning….

I walk in to work, just another day.  I look down at my cup of coffee.  Sigh, “Oh coffee,” I say taking a sip from the extra-large cup.  “What do we have today Liam?” I asked.

“Not much Bekka, just a few lacerations and a broken arm.  All the patients are already in beds and most have been seen.  Can you just run the meds over to bed 3?” Liam replied.

“Do I really have too?” I whined.  Hoping he’d say no.

“Yes, now get going.”

I walk over to the pharmacy and pick up the ibuprophen for bed 3.  Some days, being a nurse is the best job in the world.  But other days, days like this when there’s nothing going on, it’s such a drag.  I guess I could always do my charting like I’m supposed to be doing.  But I can’t I’m just going to fall asleep.  I’m too tired.  “Here you go honey.  I’m your new nurse for the night.  My name is Bekka.  Why don’t you take these with the water.  Your doctor will be in shortly to check on you.  You probably can go home soon because your stiches are holding well.”  “Thanks,” said the patient taking the medicine and doing as he was told.

Heading back to the nurses’ station I hear Liam turn on the TV.  “Breaking news.  As it would seem, Fort Irwin, California has just had what everyone is calling a zombie attack.  Just as the supposed zombie attack in Florida, the victim had been mauled and chunks of flesh had gone missing.  The accused, Specialist John Myles of the United States Army is now in custody but still is not only not responding to questions but biting and being very aggressive.  As of the moment the authorities have thrown it up to drugs.  The victim, PFC Mason Parks is now being seen at the local hospital.  His injuries are minor and have resulted in stiches.”  Suddenly I hear groaning and the monitor in bed 3 going crazy.  I see two other nurses and a doctor go running to the bed separated by just a curtin.  “I guess that’s what I get for thinking that it was going to be a slow night,” I say under my breath.  “Don’t forget to chart the meds you just gave to bed 3.” Liam said.  “He might be having a reaction to the meds.  The docs are in there with him right now.”

“HOLD HIM DOWN!!” I hear one of the doctors shout.  “Yes sir.  You need to get some one else to stich that up.  Mr. Parks got you really good.  Maybe even an HIV test?” I hear another one of the nurses say.

“Wait, isn’t that the same guy who got bitten by the solider on Fort Irwin.  I didn’t know that he was here.  Whats going on?  Now hes bitting and becoming aggressive?” I ask the nurse Pat.

“yeah.  As it would see, Mr. Parks vitals are well, below normal.  Hes close to being dead.  His blood pressure is low, so is his heart rate.  His oxygen saturation is so low and the oxygen mask isn’t helping.  We tried to get him to keep the mask on but he wouldn’t.  That’s when he bit Doctor Nakata.  Pretty bad too.  His right forearm is missing a chunk of flesh.  if we hadn’t restrained Mr. Parks he would have kept going.  It was like everything that you said to him he could not here.  He wasn’t coherent whatsoever.  I don’t understand.  He only came in for stiches for his lacerations.” Said nurse Pat, “the worse part is, it looked like Mr. Parks was trying to eat Dr. Nakata because he swallowed the chunk of flesh he took.”

Starring off in to the distance, I thought to myself.  Is this what I think this is?  It can’t be.  How could this be happening?  I know with all the hype of zombies and all the great shows, like the walking dead, playing all the time it’s something that everyone thinks they want.  But it really can’t be happening.
