Book- The Gunner and the florist
Author- CrystalCallistral
Loved the cover. It is a beautiful mix, showing the blue flower(for the florist and also for veritas and the red blood(for the gunner and crimson syndicate). It is attractive and thoroughly relatable to the story.
I don't review the cover, but I had to say it when it captured my attention.
Blurb:
Blurb is a complete package. It gives us relevant information about what to expect from the story, and also has intriguing factors. The florist needing a gun man and the said man wanting to kill the florist, it is enough to raise eyebrows. I am looking forward to seeing how the story turns out.
Moving towards the chapter,
Great start. It sets the tone, and lets us know the dynamics between Lennox and his mother. Nice way to show about the past life without info dumping. And also showing that its hard for some to let go of the lifestyle even when everything has finished. And that lifestyle being the only thing that safeguards them. In just a few sentences, the author has nicely shown us what is going on.
I am intrigued by Ren's character. Looking forward to finding the secret that has got people killed.
Trixcia seems like an important character seeing how she managed to get an alias for everybody. It was quite funny to see that such an important part of the meeting couldn't attend the meeting herself. Her fight off with Ren was amusing to say the least and the over the top reaction. However, given their background, that seemed appropriate.
I love the small snippets of bonding between Lenox and Chase.
The inner thoughts of both Lennox and Ren are really amusing.
Chapters have truly gotten more interesting after the main leads meet. I absolutely enjoyed the awkward interaction where Lennox tried to be kind, only to be shut down by Ren.
*****
Characters are awesome. Their problems really shape them for who they are and how they behave, especially when they deal with everyone else. While they are together, it is so fun to read them. They have a great chemistry.
The supporting characters also have their own distinct voices. We are able to connect and feel something for them.
World building.
The two organizations have been greatly described. It is easy to see the vast difference between them. However, the part where most of it is explained; although informative, it comes off as a lesson. So check out if the way of showcasing can be tweaked.
Plot
Concept is unique. I haven't read something like this before. As chapters go by, I found the story more and more interesting. At the start the pace seems slow, but it has picked up after chapter 5 and it is flowing smoothly.
Writing style is also good. The chapter length is perfect. Not too long and not too short.
Grammar:
Apart from fluctuating tenses, there wasn't any grammatical error found.
Last words,
Concept is good, but more than the concept, I loved the characters. The pain, the kindness, snarky comments, and the most awesome part- their inner thoughts (they seriously win the game among all). Ren and Lennox have created the urge to know more about them, to keep reading about them. And I feel that's a great achievement along with the fact that the story is written so well.
Thanks for choosing me. Keep writing!!
