When Allison Rider-Fields came to school she was greeted by some interesting news.
“Our class is going to the high school next door to give our presentations on weather to the 10th grade students. After you give your speeches you shall be partnered with a 10th grader who will give you some pointers on how to improve next time.” Their teacher Mr. Baske then proceeded to line them up at the door.
“I didn’t know we were going to give our speeches there.” Allison whispered to her friend Elli.
“Neither did I. Mr. Baske just announced it today you know. I hope I get paired with a really cute guy. There are lots of them in the 10th grade.”
Allison groaned and elbowed her friend. “We aren’t there to find cute guys you know Elli.”
“Well you can always keep your eyes open.”
“Come on class! We have a schedule to keep you know!” Mr. Baske was saying.
So they all marched in one long line down the hallway and out the door to the high school.

Soon it was Allison’s turn to present her speech. While she waited for the class to settle down her eyes wandered over the students and rested on one person in particular. It was a boy with blond hair, which was all Allison could tell because he had his head down. But then he lifted his head and their eyes locked, just for a moment because the next thing Allison knew Mr. Baske was telling her to start. After everyone had finished they got paired up. Allison got paired with a boy named Tom, but she hardly listened to him talk. She was still thinking about the blond boy in the back row. I’ll have to tell Elli about this. Maybe she’ll know something about who he is. Allison thought.
While the class walked back to their own school Elli said: “Did you see that really cute blonde guy in the back row, Alli? He looks almost exactly like you except for the fact that he’s older and, well, a guy.”
“Yeah I saw him. You really think I look like him?”
“Duh! Are you blind girl? He’s, like, your twin! That’s so weird.”
“Do you know who he is?”
“No, but I can ask my sister Isabelle. She’s in that class.”
“I want to find out more about him. You want to help?”
“Sure. We can hang out at my house and ask Izzy. Maybe we can ask the high school secretary. She might know something. You good with that Alli?”
“Yeah, sure. So your house after school then.”
The rest of the day passed in a haze for Allison. She couldn’t stop thinking about that boy. She wondered how many other kids in her class noticed the resemblance between them. Well, it didn’t really matter anyway. Her and Elli were going to get to the bottom of it.
Allison got home at promptly 3:30 and at exactly 3:35 her adoptive mother Barbra Fields came home from work. Allison was adopted because her mother and father died in a plane crash when she was just a baby. She didn’t have any other relatives any more. About a year ago her uncle had died in a car accident. She had always wondered why she hadn’t lived with him but apparently he was too busy to take care of a baby girl. Anyway she was happy with her adoptive family and none of her friends treated her any differently than they would if she wasn’t adopted. Overall, she had a pretty great life.
“Oh, Mom? I’m going over to Elli’s house. Is that okay with you?”
“Yes, that’s fine honey. Just be back by supper time.”
“Okay mom. See you!”

“Oh good! You’re here! I was beginning to wonder if you weren’t coming.”
“I didn’t take that long, silly.”
“Oh whatever. Let’s go ask Izzy if she knows anything about that guy.”
So they asked Isabelle if she knew anything about him and as it turned out, she did.
“Yeah, I know who you’re talking about. His name’s Alex Rider. He doesn’t have any parents so he lives with the Pleasures. You know them Elli. Sabina and her family. Do you want to know anything else?”
“No Izzy. I think that’ll be all. Thanks!”
“No problem, little sister.”

“Alli, we can go see the high school secretary now. What do you say? Hello, Alli?”
“Oh sorry Elli. I was just thinking. Sure we can go see the secretary.”
They walked to the school mostly in silence. When they arrived it felt strange being there with no students around. They walked through the quiet halls to the office, their footsteps sounding loud in the silence. When they got there the office was deserted.
“Do you think she’s gone home?” Allison asked.
“No, we just got out of school. She would still be here.”
So they waited. In front of them was a large office with a neat desk and a few chairs for waiting, a nameplate was stuck to the door. It said:
Jane Bedfordshire
Secretary
Suddenly a voice said: “Are you girls looking for someone?”
Elli was the first to recover from the surprise. “Yes, we’re looking for you actually. We were wondering if you knew anything about a boy named Alex Rider.”
