“Alex Rider? Oh yes I know him. A wonderful boy. His parents died when he was young so he lived with his uncle, Ian Rider I think. However, he died a while ago and so did his housekeeper who took care of him. Now he lives with the Pleasures, although in the last two terms he kept leaving for weeks at a time. Apparently he got sick. Anyway why do you two girls need to know this?”

“Oh we were just wondering.” Allison replied.

“You know, I couldn’t help but notice that you look very much like Alex. Are you related?”

“Uh, I don’t know. I’m adopted so I wouldn’t know if I had any brothers or sisters. I’m sure I don’t though.”

“Well, you never know do you? Is that all you need girls?”

“Yeah I think that’s all. Have a nice day.” Elli answered.

As they walked out of the office Allison was unusually quiet.

“Alli? Are you okay? You’re really quiet.”

“I’m just thinking about what Miss Bedfordshire said. Do you think I might actually have a brother?”

“You could. It would be really cool if you did though. Especially one as cute as Alex.”

“Seriously Elli? Is that all you can talk about at a time like this?”

“A time like what?”

“I might have a brother and all you can talk about is how hot he is!”

“Well, sheesh! Don’t get all mad at me. Who knows if he’s your brother anyway. Although we could ask him tomorrow if you want.”

“Ask him? Are you crazy? We can’t just walk up to him and say: “Hi! I’m your long lost sister!””

“Well, something’s going on. He’s got the same last name, looks, his parents died when he was little and if I’m not mistaken, his uncle’s name was Ian Rider too and he died a while ago. If that’s not suspicious I don’t know what is!”

“But what would we say to him?”

“Oh, I don’t know. We’d think of something. Anyway, I need to head home for supper. See you tomorrow!”

                                                    * * *

At school the next day Allison had made up her mind. She and Elli were going to talk to Alex Rider,

“But Alli, like you said yesterday, we have no idea what to say!”

“Well, we have until the end of the day to think of something.”

By last period they had decided on what to say, but Allison was still nervous about talking to Alex. After school was finished they walked over to the high school to find Alex. They saw him in a corner, texting. He didn’t look up as they walked toward him.

“Um... Hi.” Alli said awkwardly.

Alex looked up and said: “Hi” and went back to texting.

“Uh... Can we talk to you for a second?”

“Um... Okay.”

“So, uh, my name’s Allison Rider-Fields and this is Elli and well, we think that I might be your sister.”

The rest of the story came out in a rush, while Alex watched with a look of disbelief on his face. Alli was relieved that when she finished he didn’t burst out laughing like she’d expected him to.

“No, that wouldn’t work. Ian or Jack would’ve told me. Are you really sure?” Alex asked.

“Well, pretty sure. I mean it’s logical, all the evidence points to it.” Alli argued.

“Yeah I guess. But someone would’ve said something. Ian would have known, and he would’ve told me...or not.”

“Well, I knew about Uncle Ian and if he knew he would’ve told my adopted family. Wouldn’t he? You knew him better than me Alex.”

“He had a lot of secrets. If it was important to keep this a secret he would never say a thing.”

“But why would this be important to keep a secret? I think it’s pretty important to say.”

“ I’m sure there would be a good reason, but anyway I have to go.”

“Can we talk more tomorrow?”

“Maybe.” Alex walked off.

“Uh, Alli? I don’t think a 10th grader will want to be seen with two little girls. That’s really pride-wounding you know.” Elli remarked.

“So? We have to get to the bottom of this and I can’t do it without him. Anyway I’ve got to go home. My mom will wonder what’s happened to me. See you Elli.”

“Yeah, see you Alli. Oh, and ask your parents about Alex. Maybe they’ll know something.”

“Ok, see you tomorrow!”

As Alli walked home she contemplated what she would say when she asked her parents about Alex. When she got home she still hadn’t decided. So at supper she burst out with: “Do I have a brother?”

Mr. And Mrs. Fields looked at each other and Mrs. Fields said: “Why do you ask that Alli?”

“Because there’s a boy in the 10th grade named Alex Rider and he looks a lot like me and his parents died when he was young and he had an Uncle Ian and he has the same last name I used to. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.”

“No, you’re right. It isn’t a coincidence. You do have a brother.” Mr. Fields admitted.

“Then why didn’t you tell me? I have a brother and you keep that from me? Were you even planning to tell me?”

“Allison calm down. We didn’t tell you because we only found about it a year ago. Your uncle told us about a week before he died, and we just never got around to telling you. It never seemed like the right time. And you never asked.”

“It’s been a year since Uncle Ian died and you never told me? How could you?”

“Allison Marie Rider-Fields! Calm down! There’s no need to get this upset! We were planning to tell you very soon. We’re sorry if we caused you to fell like we were trying to keep this from you, but please Alli, we just never thought it was the right time.”

Before Mr. Fields was even half done what he was saying, Allison had stomped off to her room.

                            * * *

The next day at school Allison was still mad. She would hardly even talk to Elli. By 3:00 she was still in a bad temper. When she got home she went to her room and slammed the door. By supper time she had cooled off a little but it wasn’t until her adopted father said: “Isn’t there something you want to tell us?” that she felt truly sorry.
