On Monday Allison talked to Alex again.

“So I talked to my parents on Friday night.”

“Okay. What did they say?”

“Well...uh, they said that about a week before Uncle Ian died he told them about um, you.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that... We’re definitely related.”

“You can’t be serious.”

“Well, I kinda am.”

“I have to go.” Alex walked off for a second time.

Allison walked over to where Elli was sitting.

“So? How’d it go?”

“He seemed kind of upset. I don’t know why though.”

“You were pretty upset when you found out, weren’t you?

“Oh yeah. I guess. Anyway, I’m gonna head home now. See you tomorrow Elli.”

“Yeah, see you.”

Allison took a different route home that day. She needed to sort out her tangled thought about how having a brother would fit in to her future of becoming an artist. She supposed that it wouldn’t really matter if she had a brother or not when she went to art school. She was pondering what school she wanted to go to when a rough hand grabbed her and covered her mouth to keep her from screaming. The hand started dragging her down a dark alley when Allison bit down on the hand as hard as she could. The man holding her howled and let go of her as she started sprinting down the alley as fast as she could. In Allison’s fright she neglected to notice the small pile of cinder blocks in her way. She tripped over them and landed on the concrete with a thud. Then everything went black.

When Allison awoke the first thing she noticed was that her head hurt terribly. The second was that she most definitely was not in the dark alley anymore. She was sitting tied to a chair in a too bright artificially lighted room with a cracked concrete floor and peeling whitish-grayish paint on the walls. There were no windows and the door appeared to have no doorknob on the inside. Allison wondered if her parents were worried about her and if they were looking for her. She also wondered where she was. She was startled out of her thoughts when she heard footsteps outside the door.

When there’s a knock at the door at 12:00 am it’s never good news. The knock woke Alex Rider from his sleep with a start. As he got out of bed and quickly got dressed he remembered that the same thing had happened a year ago when Ian died. Everything had been different then. Jack was still alive and he hadn’t known about MI6. As Alex hurried downstairs to answer the door he felt a wave of sadness wash over him, not for the first time. Jack was dead. Before he could answer the door Mrs. Pleasure rushed in front of him and opened it herself.

“Mr and Mrs. Fields! How nice to see you again. What are you doing up this late?” Mrs. Pleasure asked.

“Our daughter Allison didn’t come home after school or after supper so we got worried. It’s not like Alli to run off. We’re her adoptive parents as you know and Alex Rider is living with you and he’s Alli’s brother. We were wondering if we could talk to him.” Mr. Fields explained.

“Alex has a sister? Why didn’t we know?”

“We only found out a year ago ourselves. Anyway, can we please talk to Alex?” There was desperation in Mr. Fields’s voice.

“Yes, of course. I’ll go get him.”

“I’m right here.” Alex said.

“Oh good. Mr and Mrs.Fields would like to talk to you.”
