Romero, Colorado. An archetypal peaceful town with a population of below thirty thousand people. But it the past couple of years, it has been In a state of steady a decline. At first, they were going to reinvent themselves towards the industry and, to a lesser extent, agriculture. Some of the town's more conservative residents opposed this modernisation and the transformation to the town as a tourist attraction. When this didn't follow throw, but the Mayor said that the local government had come into some money, those people were relieved and carried on their lives. Turning a blind eye to the leagues of construction vehicles and containment trucks that came to and from the town. Others turned suspicious, but were afraid to make waves and chose to pretend everything was fine.

It was the middle of the night, Officer Riley Arquette – a man in his early thirties, had pulled the short straw for patrol duty. He was situated on the outskirts of the town where next to nothing happened - accept for the odd squirrel passing by, and decided to catch a few hours sleep. But his rest was interrupted by the radio.

''What's the good word, Arquette?''

He stirred in his seat, but his eyes remained closed. Subconsciously believing the female voice was coming from the dream he tried to go back into.

''....are you even awake?!' The voice sounded stern this time.

He sat up with a snort as he fumbled for the radio. ''Sorry Denise, I was in the middle of a....high speed chase. Had my hands full. You know how itis around here.'' He lazily rubbed the sleep out of his eyes before pushing it through his bedhead curls.

''Oh yeah. I'm glad we have officers like you keeping us safe.'' She sung, sarcastically.

''What's up? Or did you just miss the sound the sound of my voice?'' The two had always had a playfully flirtatious back-and-forth, not just at the radio.

''There's a mess of chatter from state police, but they sound like they have it under control now. Just thought you should know.''

''Thank you very much, Denise. That is great news.'' He said, glibly.

''Because you don't have to get off your ass?''

He smirked.''...I'll see you when I get in.''

''Roger that.''

Just when he was about to hang up, the radio and make a U-turn back to the station, he noticed a shape amidst the narrow trees. At first he suspected it was a deer, but it was too narrow and moving lazily left and right, couldn't have been an animal. He got out of his car, but kept one leg inside as he tried to squint through the darkness. It was definitely a person. All of a sudden, they tripped onto the road and didn't get back up again. Riley knelt inside the car and took the radio again. ''Hold on Denise, I think I got some kind of a....drunk teenager or. I don't know....stand by.''

''Standing by.''

He scoffed as he shut his car door and trudged towards the male. He never wanted action. He was a policeman because it was sort of a family inheritance; his Father and his Grandfather were in the force, he had no grades to boast about or special skills, so it seemed like an easy gig. If anything was the worst part of his job, it was dealing with people like this. He slapped on a fake smile as drew closer. ''Big night, huh?''

Riley gave the mana wide birth, just in case he suddenly got vomit on his shoes, took out his flash light and inspected the rest of the male. He was covered in dirt and debris – which made sense given where he had just come from, but it also seemed like he was covered in blood. He was lying face down, so Riley couldn't see how badly the man was injured. But he was moving. He knelt down beside him, swearing he could hear sounds of choking or distress. ''Hey man, you okay?''
