You had been working the night shift at the mortuary for about 4 months now, and had encountered many of the demons Raymond had mentioned in the Night-Shift Database. Over the course of these months, you noticed a particular demon who seemed to come back more than the others. Its visits grew more and more frequent until you began seeing nearly twice a week.

Kovos.

His sigils appeared so often that you had memorised how to create the right mark to banish him, and were fairly confident you could do it with your eyes closed. Honestly, you had no idea why the demon insisted on coming back so often, because all of its possession attempts had ended in failure, but hey, who were you to judge a demon on what it does in its spare time? In a way, you were relieved when Kovos's sigils appeared, as he was a sort of comfort, something familiar to you. He preferred to jump scare you, hiding around corners and slamming doors, unlike his brethren who would drag you across the mortuary and throw you across rooms. You were grateful for that at least, not that you would ever admit it out loud.

"God, this job really is making me crazy." You spoke aloud, voicing your thoughts to the deceased body that lay on the gurney in front of you. Grateful for a demon? How low could you sink? You thought to yourself with a quirk of your lips. You were almost positive that it was Kovos in the mortuary tonight, as three of his sigils were already scattered throughout your workplace. In the back of your mind, you noticed that you felt... less possessed than usual, despite how many sigils and demonic activities were around you. Usually the demons would be fighting tooth and nail for your soul at this point, but tonight was different.

You turned around to grab a bottle of Humectant which was promptly dropped and shattered on the ground when you turned back around. Right behind you, the white, crackled-skinned figure of Kovos stood right over the gurney, closer than you had ever been to him before. Slowly, you closed your eyes and stood perfectly still, trying to calm your racing heart. After a few moments, you opened your eyes again, fully expecting the demon to be gone, like usual.

The demon simply stood there, at the head of the gurney, looking straight back at you. For a few seconds, you both just stood in your places. Eventually, you spoke up.

"So are you just gonna stand there? Or what?"

The demon just stood there, looking back at you with a blank expression.

"Great. I'm talking to a demon." You muttered to yourself, more preoccupied by the glass at your feet than the demonic presence mere feet away from you. You put your hands on your hips and inspect the wreckage of the bottle for a few moments.
"Well, I'm going to go get some stuff to clean this up." You say to the demon. "Feel free to leave."

You made your way to the storage closet and retrieved the small dustpan and brush from the bottom shelf. When you came back to the embalming room, you were surprised to see Kovos still standing at the gurney. You raised an eyebrow at him, but decided not to bother him. He seemed content to just stand there and watch you work, and it wasn't like you were about to try and tell a demon what to do.
Kneeling in front of the shattered Humectant bottle, you began sweeping up the glass. It was all going well until your hand somehow came into contact with a particularly large shard of glass.

"Shit!" You swore, blood already dripping onto the linoleum floor. Moving with a startling amount of speed, Kovos appeared inches away from you, the shock and fright of it sending you hurling backwards. You looked up at Kovos from your spot on the ground, and he just looked at you back with that blank stare.
"What?" You hiss at him, in both fear and pain. "Do you want my blood or something? Fucking freak." You muttered, not wanting to give away the fact that you were very afraid right now. A demon had never stayed this physically close to you before, and you had no idea what Kovos might do to you.

A few tense seconds went by before Kovos tilted his head at you, then focused his blank gaze on your injured hand. Then, for the first time ever, the demon opened it's mouth and spoke to you directly.

"Hurt?"

You were in shock. Never before had you been an encounter like this, where the demon you were trying to banish had come up to you and... initiated conversation?
While you were lost in thought, the demon spoke up again, and you realised that he was waiting for you to answer.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm hurt." You reply cautiously. To your surprise, the demons face morphed into an expression that you recognised as concern. Could demons even feel concern? You would have to ask Raymond about that, if you survived tonight.
The demon outstretched an arm and inched closer. Immediately you shuffled backwards until your back hit the ground and cradled your bleeding hand close to your chest. The demon froze as you croaked out a frantic "Stay back!"

Kovos lowered his arm, but spoke again insistently. "Hurt! I help."

You look at him dubiously. He gestures to your hand and says again "I help."
Looking at your hand, you notice the sheer amount of blood that you had lost in this short time. "I don't... I don't need your help." You say, trying to put a brave tone into your voice. Kovos looks at you, exasperated, before turning around and rummaging around in some shelves.
"Hey-" you scold, halfheartedly. "Don't mess up my stuff."
Kovos turns to face you, bandages in hand. "Use this." He rasps in that strange tone of his. "Will help."

He then rolls the bandages towards you, respecting the boundary you had set between them. Cautiously, you grab the bandages and begin wrapping your wound. The blood had stopped pouring out, and was now sluggishly weeping. You took that as a good sign, and finished wrapping the bandages.

All while you were doing this, Kovos stood across the room from you, intently staring at your hand. Noticing his gaze, you lift your hand and wave it at him. "See? All better?"
He doesn't look convinced. "Better? Healed?"
You laugh a little at that. "No, not healed yet. It'll be a few weeks until it is fully healed."
That seems to satisfy Kovos for the time being. "I will leave now, no need for banishment." He must have noticed your mollified expression because he continues. "You are injured still. Banishment will only hurt both of us."
You look at him, perplexed by the fact that he was... showing himself out? Then his words registered in your brain.

"Wait, hurt us both?" Honestly, you had never thought about how the demons felt when you banished them. You suppose burning in an incinerator has got to hurt anyone, demon or not. Your thoughts are interrupted by Kovos once more.

"I will come back again. Soon."
With a faint rush of air, Kovos disappears back to wherever he came from.

For some reason, the demon's words didn't feel like a threat.
