Kat dropped the veil behind her and hid in that dark space where none of her sisters were allowed, so she could better observe Mary. The girl was in that sunken state again. It would be so easy to snatch her right now and begin the game. But was she really the one to lead the pack? And would Mary be able to withstand the brutal winds of uncertainty that lay ahead? Never knowing who or where? Perhaps she should wait a bit longer to be sure. After all, there were a few other options, each nearing their hour of awakening, all with the same rhesus null. But there was no time left for this pussyfooting. And Mary was clearly the best of the lot. So Kat had to make her mind up before the next council meeting or risk losing Mother's greatest weapon. She drew nearer to Mary, close enough to walk through her and feel her darkness.

Ah, the intrusion! Xaxu and the others were ready to leave. Kat lifted the veil of darkness to allow them to sense her presence, but not her thoughts. Tomorrow! She would find Mary again tomorrow and put an end to the waiting. Or maybe she could get it over with right now.

Kat looked down at Mary. The child was trying so hard to slip away into oblivion. And here she was, about to make things harder. Yet, what other option was there? The pain was necessary to shake her awake.

"Mary," she whispered." "Open your eyes."

My eyes spring open in search of the voice that pours like rain and find my shadow, a black face with red eyes, staring back at me. I try to jump off the cot and run but it doesn't allow me to move. Then without warning it blows some of itself upon me and my body relaxes.

"Go back, Mary. Remember."
