Chapter four

breathe

As days went by, Edward bathed, fed and nursed Elizabeth. At night she would wake up covered in sweat, talking riddles as her fever ran high. He would try to disinfect her wounds, the best he could and if his crew had problems, they had to wait until he came out of his quarters, which he rarely did. Perhaps it was because he, for the first time in his life, he felt guilty for hurting another person. Perhaps it wasn't just guilt. Perhaps it was much more. Perhaps it was her, and everything i
n between her and him. Maybe, just maybe if he thought about it, he had always had his eye on her, long before they married, and even if she hadn't cheated the devil, even if he could have helped her back then, maybe they would have had the perfect love story, but no matter what excuse he tried to make for his behavior, he would always be the villain in her story, and if he thought about it, she were the villain in his. Edward had often thought if it wouldn't make them the perfect pair created by the gods? two villains falling in love by the pain, and torture they had caused each other over the years?

The picture perfect story about two carousing privateers, fighting for their lives. Edward had never had a soft spot, he knew about, but the more Elizabeth were onboard his ship, the more he began to wonder if she really were his soft spot after all. They always went to extreme lengths when fighting. So perhaps, in another universe their lips would have collided, perhaps in another universe he would have held her in his arms as they made love for the first time, perhaps.. Perhaps were a strong word for someone who hated him and if he had to be honest; he didn't mind her hatred. If she had enough emotions to form the hatred towards him, perhaps he could turn it into love, one step at the time.

He slowly poured the water from the vase onto her hair, as she sat in the tub. ''Be it 'ot enough?'' He asked, waiting for a reply that hadn't yet been visible. ''I know ye mad Elizabeth.'' He poured another vase, filled with water, onto her body. Her eyes were filled with tears. ''E-Eddie?'' She mumbled. ''I be 'ere Eliza. I be 'ere'' He dropped the vase into the water, as he turned himself around, facing her. ''The beach... It be quite lovely'' she whispered as her vision went blurry.

Biting the pain was barely an option as the agonizing cramps seemed to have crushed her insides from within. The desire for some kind of relief had crossed her mind many times. She had even contemplated giving up completely. She couldn't see an end in sight. But the thought of what she would leave behind were too much of a pain for her to bear, and yet on a whole different level she had gotten used to the pain, traveling through her body, even if the thought of sticking around were terrifying, she refused to acknowledge the pain. She refused to let the pain define her, but with an infection like hers, that had spread through her body, it was hard not to give up.

As she slowly drifted off, Edward jumped in the tub, shaking her, holding her head in his hands, screaming her name as he slapped her face, hoping to wake her up. ''SEATON!'' He screamed at the top of his lungs, as he looked for a pulse. ''SEATON!'' The door bursted open and Seaton appeared. As he saw Edward holding Elizabeth's lifeless body he ran towards them, lifting her out of the tub. As she laid on the floor, he pounded his strength through her body.

''ONE...''

''TWO...''

''THREE...''

Seaton counted, as he kept pounding between her breasts. ''When I say now, ye need to 'old 'er nose closed an' blow air into 'er mouth.. twice! with five seconds between them'' Seaton's firm voice filled the room as Edwards panicky held onto Elizabeths hand as the other gently stroked her hair. ''Come on Eliza!''

''TWENTY-TWO''

As Seaton got to thirty, his firm voice filled the room. ''NOW!'' Edward pinched Elizabeth's nose, and as their lips collided he filled her with air.

''ONE...''

''TWO...''

''THREE...''

''FOUR...''

''FIVE''

Their lips collided once more. '' It be not workin'!'' Edward yelled as Seaton once again pounded on her. ''Come on lassie! Follow me voice!'' Seaton whispered. ''I knew the keelhaul been a bad idea!'' ''Ye both capable o' everythin' in between the earth. She'll forgive ye Cap'n''

'' FIFTEEN...''

''SIXTEEN...''

Gasping after air she woke up. ''W-Where be I?!'' She panicked as she looked around. ''Ye' safe'' Edward pulled her in, as her head hit his chest, she could hear his heartbeat, beating faster than it normally should. She knew she had to move away from him, her body screamed for her to flee, but still, she sat with him on the floor, clinging to him as Seaton left the room.

Even if her hatred were strong towards Edward, she realized her love were even bigger. She had lived without him for so long, and now that he were finally here, she knew she had to throw away the past for it to work between them. ''Eliza'' Edward whispered as he stroke her hair. ''Eddie?'' She smiled as she took her hand in his. ''Remember when we was little?'' He chuckled. ''Aye... our dads 'ated each other'' She laughed as he held her closer. ''When did we become enemies Eds?'' she asked as she slowly pulled herself away from him. Their eyes met as they were inches away from each others lips. ''On our weddin' day I think'' he whispered as he removed a brown lock of hair out of her face.

Her hand found its way towards his scar. ''I be sorry'' She smiled. ''I be not. This here will fore'er be a memory o' ye'' In that moment her smile lighted up the room and he couldn't resist. He put his hands on both sides of her face, diving them into a passionate kiss and as their lips collided, butterflies sparked in both their bodies. He had just saved her, and yet he felt like she was the one who saved him. Her hands found its way towards the bottom of his shirt, slowly pulling it off. His lips found its way down her neck, slowly kissing it, leaving her moans out in the open.

Her hands slowly unbuckled his belt. Their lips collided once more as he removed his pants. There they were, on the cold wooden floor; how he had dreamed about this day. ''Be ye sure?'' He stroke her hair, waiting for her answer. ''I be sure'' she smiled as she pulled him closer, waiting for him to enter her. As Edward entered her, her nails carved into his back. Her moans filled the room, as he set up the pace. Even when Edward had longed for her, he still went slow enough, trying not to hurt her even further, with all her wounds. Maybe heroes and villains didn't exist? Maybe it was all a part of the unspoken word or bond that needed to remain hidden. They had slaughtered each other, and yet here they were. Their hearts beating for one another, all because they decided to open up their heart to each other, and if that were the case, they would have their happy ending.

But no ending is a happy ending. There is always an after, which they should have known as Edwards ship got invaded by The Barbarian Hangman. Cannon shot filled their ears, and unable to fight back, Edward had to protect her. He might not be the hero but in that moment when they stood surrounded by the enemy, he were her knight in shining armor, and when he laid on the ground, blood gushing out of him, she were taken onboard the enemy ship as her broken scream filled their ears.
