Everyone's just looking at me. Like full-on staring. And I'm starting to get self-conscious of myself, thinking something is wrong. But my mind stops reeling when Mya pulls my mother to the side. Hushed whispers are exchanged as Lily and I stand there uncomfortably.
I can't look at her, not just because of her and Aaron. But because she didn't even have the balls to be honest about how she felt. And when my relationship with Aaron was already going downhill. But I feel her intense gaze on me.
The older adults shuffle back over to us and my mother clears her throat. She looks at me with a slightly concerned face. That was the face she made when I was 16 and I got high for the first time. She thought I was dying.
"It seems that, in our perspective, your body is generating the heat that's making this room extremely hot, damn near scorching. With you angry at Lily, your body is starting to produce enough heat that competes with a volcano." Bethany explains.
"How is that even possible? Wouldn't I have died, spontaneous combustion or something like that? Can that still happen?" I pick at the skin around my nails as I ask this question. The only time I pick my nails is when my anxiety skyrockets.
Even though I can't stand her right now, I need her to stop me before I bleed. And she does. Lily grabs one of my hands and balls it in her fists. She massages it slowly.
"Yes, you should have. And we aren't sure if you will or not. Somehow your body is the only thing expelling the heat in here. You simply make the room hotter with anger. But it was already at a colder temperature in here. Your body is making the room go up to 119°." Mya explains.
I stare at her like she has two heads. That's crazy though. Normal bodies don't do that. They obviously produce heat. And of course they can make other people hot, but this is damn near insane.
"So her body is basically like, what, the sun or something?" Lily questions. Bethany hums and darts her eyes over to me.
"We have a present for you both, if you're up for it. Something that may cool you down. It's time to do an experiment on whether anger is the reason Delilah is releasing such heat." My mother inquires and opens the door to signal us out. Lily let's me walk out first and the minute I see him, I'm running to him.
"Marcus!" I yell as I speed down the hallway. He turns around and when he makes eye contact with me, he opens his arms. We may not be super close, but when I kissed him, I felt something.
Something I can't quite explain. It just felt... different. It's felt like sparks of pure joy when you see something you've wanted for a long time.
When I'm in his arms he lifts me off of the ground. He squeezes me before putting me down. But he doesn't stop hugging me.
"You're ok." He whispers. When we pull away, his face is a light pink hue before we separate completely. Lily gives him a swift hug and pulls back. Marcus is in a white outfit too. I scold back at my mother.
"I thought I told you to leave him out of this! That was my message. Do you just not listen or is that a trait you have?!" I shout. Marcus looks between Bethany and I. He puts two and two together and let's out a short gasp.
"Hello darling, my name is Bethany Harper. It's a pleasure to meet you. And may I welcome you to HavenWood." She says as she extends her hand. He softly grabs it with one solid shake before quickly letting go.
"The files we saw said that HavenWood was destroyed in a mysterious fire." Marcus whispers into my ear. A small shiver runs through me as he does it but I recover just as quick as it came and clear my throat. I nod before we're pushed forward again.
"We did burn down our older, previous facility, for security reasons of course. But we did so to create this one. A brighter, better version of the future. It may not seem like it, but this is what we call innovation." Bethany remarks over her shoulder with a bright smile as we are pushed forward.
We begin our descent back into the big Blue Room. Everyone else has retired to their respective rooms but since we were out for so long, we are all alone.
Lily waves goodbye and heads to her room, a troubled look on her face. But I return my focus to the man in front of me.
"Did they hurt you?" I ask almost immediately. He shakes his head and my heart squeezes slightly.
"But Aaron attacked me at my apartment. I don't even know how he was able to find out where I live." He says as he looks around the room.
My whole body heats up as I look over him. And I don't know why. I see the small mark from the injection. And my hand has a mind of its own. It touches the mark softly and he shudders. His head turns back and he grabs my hand.
"You know, after everything that's happened, I still want you to be ok." He whispers. I smile and look down. I feel his hand slide onto my cheek and I look into his eyes.
"Can I kiss you?" He asks. I blink back in surprise, but nod almost immediately after.
He leans forward, looking between my eyes and my lips. His eyes flutter closed, and I soon follow. His lips just barely brush mine. I can feel his soft breath against my face before he surges forward. My hand glides up his arm to his cheek.
It's a soft peck at first. But I surge forward a bit harder and he moans so softly, my body shudders. Our kisses pick up more speed, and our hands roam over each other's clothes.
He pulls back, out of breath. And smiles. My heart is beating out of my chest.
"Marcus, I..." I begin, but he cuts me off.
"Goodnight Delilah." Marcus smiles as he stands. A guard appears around the corner and leads Marcus away. I look around the room and see a small red dot in the corner. Knowing it's a camera I groan and cover my face.
Another guard turns the corner and stands behind me.
"Let's go. It's lights out." He grumbles as I stand.
When I arrive to my room I jump into my bed with a smile. But that smile quickly disappears when my mind travels to Aaron. I still love the bastard.
I have no time for love when I need to fight Douglas.
