Chapter 10.
Tobais stayed in David's arms for a while. It felt good to hug someone, he was less stressed for some reason. This must've been what his textbook meant by comfort or safety. The definitions added up well. Everytime Tobias would break into another sob David held him tighter, he felt so helpless in his arms. There was nothing he could do to stop crying, he wanted to, but he just couldn't.
David brushed through Tobias's brown-scarlet hair with his hands, which seemed to calm him down a bit. He could tell this sudden outburst of a breakdown was going to happen, He just didn't know when. Luckily, he was there to help smooth it over.
D.'Hey. Do you feel better?'
He whispered.
Tobais shrugged and pulled away from his shoulder. He took his glasses from the side table sliding them on.
T.'Can we forget that anything of this happened. Please?'
D.'Why do you want to forget?'
T.'It's embarrassing.'
D.'There's nothing embarrassing about needing help.'
T.'I didn't need your help, I could've handled myself.'
D.'Sure.'
David hopped off of the bed as Tobias let out an irritated sigh.
D.'So are you going to class?'
T.'Yes. I can't miss any more days.'
D.'Okay, I'll help you get there.'
T.'We only have one class together, you don't need to miss yours to help me. I'm completely capable on my own.'
D.'Stand up.'
Tobias went quiet for a moment.
T.'I rather like it here.'
D.'Here.'
David tossed him some ice and brought him the crutches.
D.'Did you mean it?'
T.'Mean what?'
D.'When you called me pretty?'
T.'I didn't know! Like Eric said I was on medication.'
D.'So you don't think I'm pretty?'
He said mockingly.
T.'No! I never said that! Stop it!'
He laughed for a few seconds before helping Tobias up. His leg was injured badly and his palms were scratched from the concrete. Somehow he looked worse than before. David lifted Tobias's arm up to each crutch as he struggled to keep himself upright. He toppled over onto his tolerable knee, questioning himself.
As pain goes, this might've been the worst tobias had ever experienced. Lightning struck his entire body when he even put pressure on his toes. David accompanied him down the hallway making sure he didn't trip or make any more detours. He kept asking him if he needed any help, and such. Clearly he did, but not in a way he could fix.
'Here, I'll open the door for you.'
'Thanks.'
'Can we hang out during free period? Most of my friends go to either Crawford or Lake. I don't think you want to hang out with Eric anyways.'
'No, I'll be around Eric. I just... never mind.'
He limped through the door into his class and as he looked back David had already left.
