Buddy was walking home from school, trapped in thought about his latest prototype, the Velocipod. It was a round open car with four surrounding blades that spin at exceedingly high speeds to keep it airborne. It could also shoot out laser beams, at least that's what it was supposed to do. Buddy couldn't yet figure out how to get them to work, but it could fly like a charm. As of now it was only the size of a DVD and controlled by a small remote. He hoped to eventually make it to scale.
Buddy had been still trying to force himself to cope with the fact that he was rejected by the man he idolized most, Mr. Incredible. Even though it happened 3 years ago it still bugged him.
'That bastard will pay,' he thought to himself.
He was 13 now, his hair was longer, his facial features were beginning to define themselves, and he was even starting to form muscles.
Buddy continued to make his way home, flying the tiny Velocipod around his head and through tree branches. As he walked he began to hear a faint wining sound. The further he walked the more he could hear. Someone was in trouble. Buddy sped up the pace, and made the Velocipod fly at his side. He came upon two boys bullying a small girl.
"Go away! Leave me alone," she shouted with her tiny little voice.
"Make us," the larger boy said as he grabbed a handful of her dark hair and threw her into the dirt.
The girl started to cry and Buddy couldn't watch anymore. As both of the boys began to approach her he flew the little gadget full speed toward them, putting large, bloody gashes on both their arms and returning it back to his side.
"Leave her alone or next time it won't be your arms," Buddy ordered, eyeing their necks cruelly. Part of him wanted to see them bleed to death, but he did not wish to frighten the small girl.
The boys ran away clutching their arms tightly. Buddy sat down the Velocipod and remote and walked over to the girl. He extended his hand to her, offering to help her to her feet and she took it gladly. Everything about her was so tiny. Her fingers, her feet, her lips, and her cute little nose. The only large thing on her were her deep blue eyes which seemed to take his breath away.
The girl was wearing an old pair of mitch-match socks with some tethered old white sneakers, that had turned slightly yellow from wear and age, short tan cargo shorts and a purple sweater that was too big for her. After taking his hand she stood up and scratched her head where the mean boy had pulled her hair.
'She's so cute,' Buddy thought.
"Thank you," she spoke lightly and it startled him a little because she was speaking directly to him.
"You're welcome," he said as he continued to hold her soft little hand, rubbing his thumb across the top gently and she smiled at him, a beautiful smile. "Where are your parents, I will take you to them." In that very moment her smile went away. Buddy didn't like this.
"I don't have any parents. I'm an orphan," she said sadly.
"I'm sorry," was all he could think to say. "Where is the orphanage so that I can take you there," he asked. She pointed him in the right direction. He grabbed his things and they began to walk, and he held her hand a little tighter. "What is your name little one," Buddy asked her.
"Mud," she said, "My name is Mud, at least that's what everyone at the orphanage calls me."
This made Buddy angry. 'Why would they call her that?' "My name is Buddy."
"That's a nice name. I hope that when I get adopted that my parents call me Lily."
"Then that is what I will call you," Buddy said plainly,"Lily." In this moment he only wanted to make her happy.
They continued to walk until they reached the doors of the orphanage. The large grey doors opened and there stood a tall skinny lady. She wore dark clothes over her pale skin and her hair was pulled up in a bun. She appeared to be in her late 50's and she had a long pointy nose.
Buddy stood there for a while until Lily began to speak and then he turned to walk away.
"Good evening Mrs. Croft," Lily said with a curtsy.
"Look at you girl," Mrs. Croft said haughtily, "Your clothes are filthy!"
"Some boys tried to beat me up," Lily shrugged, "but Buddy saved me-"
"I don't care," Mrs. Croft spoke, rudely interrupting Lily, " Go and clean yourself, Mud."
Buddy then became very angry and turned slightly to face the woman, "Her name is Lily," Buddy said angrily as he eyed the wicked looking lady.
"What did you say boy," Mrs. Croft grumbled.
Buddy walk up until he was right in front of the woman, "I said her name is Lily." His demeanor grew dark and you could see the hint of fear in Mrs. Croft's eyes.
Buddy looked at Lily and stooped down to her level so that they were eye to eye. "I want to see you again," he spoke softly to her. Lily nodded a smiled at him sweetly. She went to walk away Buddy stood up and gave Mrs. Croft a stare that could have stopped anyone's heart. Lily saw this and even she was immobilized with fear.
Buddy turned and left. He would be back tomorrow to see the small girl again. Once more he flew the tiny Velocipod around him as he made. his way home.
