Chapter Five
The Run

The council had given Alyssa the all-clear, provided she'd wear protective gear and come for a check-up with Hershel right after. She wasn't sure how to prepare for a run. She used to be out there all the time, a run was just another day. But now it was something more. It was a dangerous mission with many things that could go wrong, especially with other people there. She had her hair tied back in a simple braid from her neck down with a few loose strands sticking to her face in the Georgia heat. She'd put on jeans instead of shorts for a change with a nirvana t-shirt one size too big for her. She'd packed most of her knives in a bag strapped to her leg as well as some in her belt.

Alyssa leaned against the hood of her car as she watched the group gather. Three members of the council were coming: Daryl, Sasha, and Glenn. The only one she wasn't aware was coming was Michonne, who'd only just returned to camp after being gone for a while. To be entirely honest, Michonne intimidated her more than anyone. She was a badass, sword-wielding, beautiful woman that could at any minute destroy her.

Glenn was headed her way with a couple of boxes stacked in his arms. Alyssa opened the trunk for him and he put the boxes inside. He took a thick vest out of the only not entirely empty box. He handed it to her. "Safety first." he reminded her.

Alyssa rolled her eyes but put the bulletproof vest on. "I'm already sweating my ass off," she told him with a chuckle.

"Yeah, that's Georgia." Glenn shrugged, closing the trunk of the car. "Now imagine driving all over town without air conditioning delivering pizzas." he gave her a side glance and took something out from behind his back and placed it on her head. "That's why I wore one of these."

Alyssa adjusted the cap on her head. "Thank you."

"Just making sure you're ready," Glenn said, flicking the cap.

"And you have to be sure," Sasha added, closing the trunk behind them. "You can't panic out there."

"I was out there for a long time, I won't," Alyssa promised, taking the car keys out of her pocket and tossing them to Glenn, who caught them mid-air.

"She's got this," Glenn added as he walked to the other side of the car, giving her a reassuring smile and nod. He opened the car door and got in the driver's seat.

Sasha walked up to Alyssa. "Kids ride in the back," she said somewhat playfully and gestured over her shoulder with her thumb.

"Don't worry," Michonne joined in on the conversation. "Riding in the back with me is much more fun anyway."

A smile grew on Alyssa's face. With a single sentence, she didn't seem that scary anymore. Of course, she was still an absolute badass, but her tone implied she was looking to form an allyship. In the same way, Alyssa wanted Michonne to like her, Michonne wanted Alyssa to like her too. Or she was just reading too much into it again. She often did it to compensate for her difficulty understanding her own emotions.
