"Nothing better than a girls' day!" Sarah declared as we sat at one of the free tables of the bar.

Since I had returned to Hollow Creek, I had barely got the time to see my best-friend. Juggling between family business, Midsummer's preparation and my own life had not been so easy for me. Kook problems you would say. And you would be right. But they were still problems anyway.

Now that Midsummer was over, our lives were back to the slow and cool pace of the summer. So, I had called Sarah earlier in the day to see if she was free to hang out with me this afternoon. Fortunately for me, she hadn't planned anything with John B, so she had agreed immediately.

We were at one of the bars of Figure Eight. I had specifically asked Sarah if we could stay away from The Wreck today. I still had mixed feelings towards JJ and I didn't want to take the risk to bump into him.

So instead of our usual spot, Sarah and I had opted for a cute little café overlooking the ocean. It was a cozy and peaceful place, perfect for me now.

We were sipping our drinks and chatting since about half an hour already, but I had the unpleasant feeling that we were being spied upon. Every now and then, I would catch some girls glancing at us and then whispering between them. Some of them didn't even try to hide it and just glared at me like I was some despicable person.

"What's wrong with them?" I asked Sarah at some point, starting to get sick of all the not-even-hidden gossiping.

She looked around us and glared at a group of teens who were staring at us. Then she focused on me again. She looked down at her hands, clearly avoiding my gaze. She winced like she was hiding something from me.

"What is it, Sarah?" I asked again, a little more harshly than I intended.

That made her look up at me. "Well, you know that it's a small island. And that people love to gossip, right?" She started, visibly avoiding the main subject. I didn't answer. Instead, I just eyed her impatiently. "It seems like Rafe and Chloe had broken up two or three days ago, right after Midsummer." Her voice faded quietly at the end.

My face dropped. "What?" I asked with surprise. "Why?"

"Well, I don't really know. Maybe she realized he's a dick." She said, still avoiding my gaze. She busied herself mixing her drink with her straw instead.

I frowned and crossed my arms on my chest. I knew she was hiding something. "Sarah Cameron, you're Kildare's queen of gossip, I know you know something." I said with a severe look on my face.

"Okay, okay. Maybe I've heard some things." She blurted. "But these are just rumors, and I don't want you to be hurt again." She added, sadness in her eyes.
