Chapter 4

Sitting in a Victorian style room, two tall bookshelves are at the double door entrance, the one to the right has books, but the one to the left has fine porcelain and tea sets. The center of the room is a low coffee table with two green leather couches, a candelabra is on the table. Across from the entrance door is a strong oak desk with a tall candle, and beside it is a box room that is a shower with a small curtain. Behind the couch that he sits on is double doors, but they’re white and lead to somewhere he hasn’t cared to look.

As he waits for the students, he snacks on a strawberry and kiwi parfait. As he waits, voices come from outside the room, the people walk into the room speaking loudly.

“- He’s not ready for a familiar.” Rias says, walking past Alexandre unnoticed. “We shouldn’t rush the progress.”

Akeno waves to Alex, “I’m telling you that I think he’s ready, it’s still good to try.”

“He hasn’t even made a proper contract yet!” Rias lashed out, she fell into the desk chair.

Akeno smiles and looks back to Alex, she bows to him slightly, “Mr. Jong, what do you think of Issei getting a familiar?”

“Jong!?” Rias jumps out of her chair and takes notice of Alexandre eating his dessert. “When did you get here!?”

“Hmm? I’ve been here for quite some time now, before you two actually.” He places down his glass and spoon, “So, what’s this about Hyoudou?”

Rias looks between him and her queen, Akeno giving a wicked innocent smile. “He and Asia are low ranked devils, so they’ve been doing contracts on their own. Akeno thinks they’re ready for a familiar, but I don’t agree.”

“Hyoudou and Argento… I don’t know much about them, but this is your peerage.”

“But you have a peerage of your own, what would you do in this circumstance?”

“I don’t have a queen piece, it’s the piece that I never want to use. But when I get a new piece, I train them physically and mentally, then bring them to get familiars.” Alex grabs his parfait and continues to calmly eat.

Akeno sits across from Alexandre, Rias says, “I think that Issei can draw something strong, but I don’t think he’s ready.”

“Then ask the rest of your peerage” He leans back in the seat, showing that he has no more interest.

Akeno claps, “I’ll go get them.” She gets up and leaves the room, leaving Rias and Alexandre to their own devices.

The two left alone sit in silence, as Alexandre finishes his glass, he conjures a second glass that’s lemon and raspberry. Rias looks at the coffee table and on it are five empty glasses, she looks back at him in surprise.

“You like your sweets, huh?” She observes. “Reminds me of Koneko in a way.”

“Ms. Toujou? I never actually spoke to her, only heard very, very inappropriate rumors.”

“Why do you always call people by their last name? We’re all devils here, and you’re a higher class.”

“It’s second nature, you’re younger, I’m older. You’re of lower status, but not class.” He summons a chess board on the coffee table, all but the queen piece is there. “I’ve always been taught to be respectful, to anyone who isn’t my friend. Do you want to play as we wait?”

“Sounds relaxing.” She sits across from him and summers her own pieces. “You can just call us by our first names, we’re all devils. So Rias is just fine.”
