The gemstone war

The war

 "This is my gemstone," said Queen Luna proudly.

"That's a nice gemstone," Queen Lilly replied quietly.

"Oooh," Queen Emerald said, it was clear that the gem had sparked her interest.

Luna moved to pick up the smooth, orange-and-black stone.

"It's quite pretty, are you looking to get rid of it?" Lilly asked cautiously.

"Never," Luna said, surprised.

The HiveWing queen cocked her head to one side, it was clear she was thinking hard. "Well... I want it, and it would be good for my tribe..."

Luna shook her head, her blue eyes were suddenly furious.

"No!"

"Or you could give it to me," Emerald butted in.

Luna's snout twisted into a snarl. "I am NOT giving you this stone."

The two dragons circled each other, one black, one green.

"How about," Queen Lilly said cautiously, "we battle over it, and the winner claims the jewel as a prize?"

"NO," Luna snapped. "It's my gemstone, why are we arguing over this?"

"War war war war!" chanted Queen Emerald, despite what she had just said.

"This calls for war!" the NightWing sighed, finally giving in.

"My subjects, we are at war with the HiveWings and the SeaWings," Queen Luna whispered.

A shocked silence fell over the crowd.

"What! war! no! this can't be happening!" Rosefire murmured to herself.

"Yes, we are at war," Queen Luna sighed. "I know it seems impossible, after so long... but, we must."

"Mom there can't be a war, that is impossible. How did it start?" rosefire whispered to her mother, who was standing next to her in the crowd.

" I don't know Rose, but we'll find out," replied Evelina.

"Wait! Why is this happening? Why now?" a NightWing in the crowd demanded.

"Yeah! Why now?!"

"Quiet, quiet," Queen Luna called softly, still, her voice carried over the crowd and the arguing dragons grew silent.

"Mother I am going away until the war is over," announced Rosefire quietly.

" I think that is a great idea, but please come back sometime soon," replied Evelina, her voice pained. "After the war is over? Please? I can't stand the thought of you in danger."

Rosefire trembled, the thought of war was terrifying. "I'll come back when it's over," she promised.
