It all hit me one night when my parents weren't home, only my sister, Kahlo and I were around. Kahlo was fast asleep, and I was up late. I decided to grab a book off of my shelf, but since it was so dark I couldn't see what book I was reaching for. The only thing I could remember is that it was a very heavy book, it wasn't like my usual books I would read. I carried the book with my two hands and placed it very quietly and gently on my table, I reached over to my curtains and opened them. The moon was shining and glistening over my face.
I sat down and began to read the book:
"Years ago, an empire, more specifically, Romero's parents' empire ruled. They were a happy family, filled with smiles and good times. Unfortunately, Ever since Romero's parents' died from being shot on the dueling ground, that made him an orphan but young Romero didn't want to stop from being royalty, so he decided that he would be crowned the new King. He got crowned the new King on the 17th of August, 2008."...
-...God. I checked my calendar and I noticed that it was the 17th of August, 2012.The same day that he got crowned as the new king. My door creaked open, and to my surprise, Kahlo caught me reading the book. I froze and said, "What are you doing up at this time, Kahlo? You're meant to be asleep!"
"I should be the one asking you that, Karsyn."
"Karsyn? Seriously. Why can't you just call me by my middle name?"
"Whatever, Kyoto. Why are you up at this time?"
"I was trying to get back to sleep, until you came in."
"By reading a book? That will make you more tired, and anyways, mother said we're moving today, so don't exhaust yourself too much."
"What?"
"Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you."
"We're moving?"
She sat down on my table, staring at the book I held in front of my face. She picked it up and started to read it out loud.
"Woah. That's cool." she said, closing the book and placing it back on the table.
"Cool...? Are you stupid? We could end up dying later! You don't know what he has planned!""True. He's just a stupid king who doesn't even care about his people!" she yelled. I covered her mouth with my hand and whispered, "Shut up! He might be listening through the bushes or something!"
She laughed and glared at me up and down, "In the bushes? He's not that dumb."
"Well, whatever I was exaggerating. Kahlo, sweet sister, we have to do something! If we don't do something, we will probably end up dead. Do you want mom, dad and I to die, huh?!"
"No."
"Exactly, how about we run away later, come back again tomorrow or another day? Another day when it isn't today."
"Fine. But if this leads to something stupid, I'm out of here. I'm out of your stupid plan."
"It won't I promise."
"I'm going to go and pack, also probably tell some friends to come with us, you should probably pack as well."
"Okay."....
She shut the door and I rushed over to the book. I made sure it was left open to the paragraph that I read last and I decided to get changed, it was quite cold outside so I wore this really long overcoat. I also brought a scarf with me so I wouldn't get cold.
Kahlo opened the door fully prepared and I stared at her with this really bewildered look on my face.
"Are you seriously bringing all of that?"
She had a whole bag filled with clothes, water and other things that were very unnecessary.
-"Yeah."
"This isn't a vacation y'know. We can come back home at any time we want."
"True, but it's good to be prepared anyways...we could end up needing some of this stuff later on!"
I rolled my eyes at her and sighed.
"Whatever, should we leave now?"
"I don't know it's up to yo-"
"Wait, I forgot one more thing, let me just write mom a note, just so she knows where we are."
"Hurry up then."
I picked up a pen and began to write on a piece of paper:
"Dear mom,
I know you might be wondering why Kahlo and I aren't at home, well, this letter answers it.
We are trying to stop King Romero and his stupid leadership. If we don't see you by today, then please write back and leave your letter by the mailbox. I love you mom, we will be back someday. I promise.
Yours Sincerely, your son, Karsyn."
"Are you done writing?"
"Yes. Now, we should probably get going before dawn."
"Good idea."
Kahlo left before me and I almost forgot one more important thing...the book! I didn't see the name of the book because of how dark it was, but that doesn't matter, I picked up the book quickly and ran after Kahlo. I had to run down a million stairs just to finally leave the house with her.
"I'm going to bring Adora and her other friends here, do you mind waiting just near that lamppost over there?"
"Sure."
I walked over to the lamppost that she pointed to. Her brown, silky hair blew in the windy breeze as she was heading to her friend Adora's house. I remember that Adora was her best friend since she was little, they became friends when I was at least thirteen.
Waiting took quite a long time, I was starting to get impatient and bored so I opened the book. But surprisingly, I heard a voice speak to me:
-"Greetings, Karsyn! You must be wanting to find Romero and stop him, am I right?"
"Who the hell are you...? And why is my book talking-"
"I'm Wanderer. Can you believe it? I was once like you, but I'm not going to get into detail here. What matters is that you don't make the wrong choices like I did! I will be here to guide you on your journey."
"Ah. Great...and thanks for that-"
"In order to defend your people, you have to take on a little adventure. You need to gather everyone you can find that knows something about Romero, build a friendship with them, use that friendship to fight him off, maybe or possibly end up duelling him...something like that! And voila, you're the new king! But also, there is a reward if you complete this mission, and there is also a consequence if you fail to do so."
"Wow, I didn't know it was that easy."
"It's not easy, I was being sarcastic when I said it was a little adventure."
I shut the book in annoyance, why the hell was my own book talking to me? And who even was this "Wanderer" person. Good thing I shut the book in time, because I saw Kahlo with Adora and some other random people I didn't even know.
"Hey Karsyn. I'm back!"
"Oh hey, Kahlo. And hello Adora!" I nervously chuckled while sweating.
"What's up with you?"
"Nothing...just stuff...you know!"
"Uh-huh. Sure."
My eyes directed to this one girl. She was behind Kahlo, I didn't even know her, but she was so pretty. She was beautiful...like an angel, sent from Heaven! She had beautiful brown eyes, dark brown hair and she was smiling at me.
"Karsyn? Oh, I see you're looking at my friend Clairé!" Adora exclaimed.
"Yeah..."
She put my arm around me. I had to pull myself together. Jeez, she's confident...
"So your name is Karsyn, huh?"
"Yeah...but I go by my middle name, Kyoto."
"Well, too bad. I love your name."
"Thanks...I guess. Wait your name was Clairé! Right...?"
"Mhm."
"You seem so interested in me. We've only just met, how about you go and meet the others?"
"Uh, sure..."
"Hey, I'm Amalfi! Nice to meet you." a girl with blonde hair waved at me.
I waved back because I didn't want to seem rude.
"And I'm Artemis!" the girl next to Amalfi said calmly.
I smiled at her. Fun fact about me, I'm not really good at socialising with people I've never met. But whatever, they were going to help me anyways.
"We should start going." Kahlo suggested.
"Okay." Clairé responded.
I nodded and I opened the book. It showed a map of Romero's kingdom. The first closest thing near to his kingdom and that wasn't so near to us was the woods. I took the lead since I was probably the bravest person in the whole group; walking didn't even take an hour and the rest complained that they were tired.
"Karsynnn...I'm tired..." Clairé whined in my ear.
That almost made my ear drums explode, my heart started to race.
"Fine. Since almost everyone is feeling tired, how about we all just sleep near a tree or something?"
"Sure..." Clairé yawned.
They raced towards the nearest tree. But I leaned against the tree with the book in my hand, but before I opened it, I had to make sure they were all fast asleep. And to my surprise, they were dead asleep.
I opened the book and that mysterious Wanderer person began to speak to me:
"Why aren't you sleeping? You need to get some rest. And then when you wake up, you'll be very busy.""Fine. I'll go to sleep, just, don't talk to me while I'm asleep, aight?"
I shut the book and wrapped my overcoat around myself since it was getting a bit cold, I held the book in my arms and I drifted off to sleep, slowly.[End of Chapter 1]
