Sibling Bond, Vet Visit, & Young Love
Crystal looked up from the book she was reading as Ash walked in the back door. He remained standing in front of the door, seemingly lost in his own world.
"How was your walk?" she asked, causing him to jump in surprise.
"Geez, Crystal. How do you do that?" Ash asked in annoyance.
"Do what?" she asked, tilting her head to the side with an innocent expression on her face.
"Sit so quietly that I don't even realize that you're there," Ash responded. "It doesn't make any sense. I even looked through the window before coming in to make sure Mom wasn't here. I didn't even see you."
Crystal laughed. "That's probably because Mom is taller than me. Maybe if you had looked down a little further, you would've noticed me."
Ash laughed with her. "You know, I should be the one making fun of how short you are, not the other way around."
Crystal rolled her eyes. "Yeah, like you don't already do that enough."
Ash shot her an innocent smile before slipping his sneakers off. "So, how was your first day of school?"
Crystal shrugged, watching him as he went over to the fridge and started looking for something to eat. "Alright. I made a couple friends, although I don't know if I could actually call them friends, yet."
"That's good," Ash commented, pulling some leftover pizza from the night before out of the fridge and heating it up." Knowing you though, they're already counting you as a friend."
Crystal looked at him curiously, noticing how distracted he seemed. Normally he would ask what her new friends' names were and what she thought of them. She also noticed how he kept looking out at the woods behind their house, as if he was looking for something, or someone.
"You alright, Ash? Did you find something while in the Preserve?" Crystal asked, concern lacing her voice.
Ash quickly looked at her and shook his head, sending her a tight smile. "No, just ran into two of the guys who are on the lacrosse team."
"Ash..." Crystal said in warning. "I know that's not all. You know I can tell when you're lying."
Ash sighed. "There was this really creepy guy, Derek Hale, that confronted us about being on private property. It was really weird."
"How so?"
"Well, according to Stiles, one of the guys I ran into, there was a really bad fire in Derek's house a couple years back. Apparently, all of his family was killed in it."
"That's sad," Crystal paused. "Does he go to our school?"
"Oh, no. He's a couple years older than us," Ash explained. "I guess he left town after the fire, and now, he's back.
Crystal nodded thoughtfully. "I wonder what he's doing back."
"That's exactly what I said!" Ash exclaimed, pulling the leftover pizza out of the toaster oven and joining his sister on the couch.
Crystal smiled and laughed. "We are siblings after all."
"Yeah," Ash nodded, taking a couple bites of the pizza before he asked, "Are you going to the party this Friday?"
Crystal shook her head. "No, you know how I feel about parties."
"I know, just thought I'd ask."
"Be careful, alright? There's supposed to be a full moon that night, and with everything that happened last night, I'd feel better knowing that you didn't do anything stupid."
