Michael was pacing around the room with Luke following his every move with his eyes. He kept mumbling things under his breath before cursing and shaking his head again, as if whatever he came up with wasn't strong enough. This entire process repeated itself over a course of fifteen minutes. Up until the peace, or well whatever semblance of peace there was, was broken.
"What the fuck are you doing?" Nia asked, seemingly amused by the worried boy in front of her.
"Nia!" He said excitedly. "You know girls, maybe you can help me."
The amusement on her face transitioned into a combination of worry and surprise. "How the hell did you fuck up with Laur this time?" She questioned, couldn't one couple be steady in this group? Nia plopped down on the couch next to Luke, who offered her some of his popcorn.
Mike quickly shook his head. "Laur and I are good. Perfect actually. I was talking about another certain brunette who I may or may not have been ignoring whilst she was going through a break up." He winced, saying it out loud really did make it sound much worse.
Nia immediately shot up again. "You did what?!" She screeched.
"I know, I know it's bad. That's why I need your help to fix it." He swiftly replied, holding up his hands to show he meant no harm. Or to fight her off when she inevitably tried to kill him. He hadn't quite decided yet.
Nia scoffed, sitting back down. "You can fix shit yourself. I'm not the one who was a dick towards my supposed best friend."
"Ha, that's exactly what I said." Luke replied, holding out his hand for a high-five which Nia immediately returned. Mike let out a loud groan, his situation seemingly becoming more bleak by the minute. He returned to his pacing. Maybe the extra blood pumping to his brain would produce a good idea. Luke held out his popcorn again which Nia, this time around, gladly accepted.
It felt like all Mike was doing these days was pacing, or stressing. He hadn't really figured out a game plan but here he was, at Shay's front door, planning to get onto his knees and beg for her mercy. And if that wouldn't work he'd brought her favorite dessert. After another shaky breath he finally raised his fists and knocked on the door. He could hear footsteps nearing almost instantly, panic shot through his body again but he figured it was too late to chicken out.
"Luke I told you, you don't have to check on me. I'm-" As soon as Shay opened the door and saw Mike standing there her pleasant expression fell. "If you're looking for Laur she's not here."
Mike quickly shook his head, with his gaze stuck on his feet he said, "I was actually here to see you."
Shay's brows shot up in surprise. "Wow, I didn't know that you were allowed to be associated with me." She replied in a flat tone.
Mike winced, "Can I come in? I'd like to apologize."
"You can apologize from outside just fine." She replied, crossing her arms and leaning against the door frame.
"I brought your favorite dessert?" Mike attempted, holding up the bag.
Shay looked at it for a moment before her hard gaze turned back to his. "Say what you have to say Mike or leave."
Mike's expression fell, he nodded and cleared his throat. "I'm sorry for not trying to hear out your side of the story pertaining to your situation with Cal. It was a shitty move and I know I shouldn't have done it."
Shay pursed her lips and nodded. "That all?" She asked, still stoic. Mike looked uncertain but nodded nonetheless.
"Kay." She said, before attempting to close the door before Mike blocked it with his foot.
"That's all you have to say?" He asked, panic seeping into his voice.
"What is it you want from me, Mike?" She sighed.
Michael dragged his hand through his hair. "I don't know. Something. Anything. Yell at me. Call me a dickhead. But don't be so apathetic." He pleated.
Shay's face twisted into an empathetic expression. "I'm pissed with you beyond words, Mike. And frankly, I don't wanna see your fucking face. You're my best friend but believed I'd be capable of something so malicious. And that, that's what really fucking hurts. You don't deserve me yelling at you or getting mad." She said, her voice breaking at the end. Mike looked stunned. He knew he had screwed up but he didn't realize the extent of it. "With all disrespect, fuck off Mike. I really don't wanna see you right now." Mike nodded and finally removed his foot from the doorway, expecting the door to slam right in his face. But it stayed open, with Shay still staring at him, tears welling in her eyes. The two stood there for a few moments just looking at each other, before she fully broke down in tears. Mike didn't hesitate before pulling her in for a hug. She immediately latched onto him. They stood there in silence, the only thing breaking the quiet were her shaky breaths. Eventually when she finally calmed down a little she broke the silence.
"I'm still mad at you." She whispered into his chest. Michael nodded before realizing that she couldn't see that. "I know." He whispered.
"I also really fucking missed you." She said a whilst later. This time Mike responded by pulling her even closer. He knew he wasn't out of the clear yet, but he was just glad that she wasn't acting like she didn't care about him anymore. He figured that, even though it would take some time, they would be able to work through this. He would do anything it took to make her trust him again.
