He couldn't stop running. The day was warm with a light breeze and there was a buzz of something good in the air. But moment was ruined when he had been reminded that he was nothing good. That there was no warmth to him, no love.
So he ran, for who needed a person such as that.
He ran through fields of wildflowers, his feet and clothes stained green with how often he tripped. Through the forest on it's sharp sticks and thorn ladden floor until they pierced him and took payment for entry. Through the village filled with countless whispers about the mayor's useless son, new taunts to be tattooed in his mind.
Until he found the beach and met Them.
The sun's rays were so wonderfully warm that he crumbled into the wet sand and screamed. How horrible it felt to feel such comfort over his body. Blinded by his own tears, he didn't see the water rise in front of him and only when he heard a voice, had he gathered the strength to wipe them.
"Child,"
Odd, was his first thought.
It had no shape, it stood as a huge mass of water floating above the sand. Slowing making it's way around him, it spoke again.
"Child, they do not deserve your love." It said.
"They don't," he said. "But I want to love them, I want them to love me. Why don't they love me? What have I done wrong?"
"Nothing."
The water seemed to think.
How odd, to be able to assume such a thing when there was no expression. Only the circling movement it made around him.
"Will you love us?"
Love .. it?
"We have done nothing to deserve your love, just as they had done nothing. Will you love us?"
I don't know who it is, what it is. How do you love an unknown?
Kneeling before the water, I lift both my hands, "Of course."
"Why?"
"Why not? Will you hurt me?"
"No."
"Will you love me in return?"
"We always have, always will."
He smiled, "Then I will love you, strange as you are."
There came a soft, pleasant laugh. And it was the last thing he heard before water surrounded him and everything faded to nothing.
