Jesse woke up but didn't open his eyes straight away. He cuddled into what he thought was his pillow, but then he heard a heartbeat. He opened his eyes and looked up, seeing Lukas asleep underneath him. Jesse blushed and attempted to scootch off of him without waking him up, but failed. Lukas woke up and looked embarrassed, and only then did Jesse realize how it looked.
"I- I think we both fell asleep last night?" Jesse said. Lukas nodded awkwardly as Jesse fully got off of him. "Uh, sorry for waking you up."
"N-No problem." Jesse hobbled over to his bed and sat down. Lukas got up and began to look for something in a chest, but neither of them said anything for a while. That is until Jesse saw a creeper walking around right outside the front door.
"Creeper!" He yelled, jumping up and running over to Lukas.
"Aw, man! It's daytime, what's that doing there?" Lukas pulled out a stone sword and walked towards the door. "Stay here, alright? I don't want you out there without armour." Jesse nodded as Lukas opened the door. He stepped out and closed it behind him. Jesse heard silence for a few seconds, then an explosion. His heart leaped out of his chest as he sprinted out the door without thinking. There was a huge hole in the ground, and Lukas was lying a few feet away from it looking surprised. He seemed to be in shock until he noticed Jesse was outside.
"Heh, looks like your ankle's feeling better," Lukas said, standing up. Jesse rolled his eyes and ran over, hugging Lukas.
"Don't scare me like that!" Lukas chuckled awkwardly and hugged back.
"Hey, I'm okay. I only lost one heart." That just made Jesse hug Lukas tighter, and he stayed like that for a few more seconds before releasing Lukas.
"For a second, I actually thought you died. I don't think I can do this on my own. I mean, I would already be dead if it weren't for you."
"Hey, it's not like that's your fault. Anyone would die if they spawned during the night. Heck, I almost died on my first day too. I got to half a heart." Jesse looked surprised.
"Really? What happened?"
"It's, ah, kind of embarrassing actually. I found a shipwreck that had some weird stew in it, and since I had no food, I ate it. Turns out it was poisoned." Lukas said, blushing. Jesse chuckled.
"Well, at least you didn't die of starvation," Jesse said with a smile. Lukas chuckled. They looked into each other's eyes and said nothing for a few seconds until Lukas cleared his throat and looked away.
"Wanna go mining? It's about time we crafted you some armour." Jesse smiled.
"Sure! Just try not to blow up this time."Lukas led Jesse down a long, cramped tunnel.
"I'm pretty sure there's a cave down here. Just stay behind me if we run into any mobs."
"Alright, but I wanna fight stuff as soon as I get armour." Lukas chuckled.
"Adrenaline junkie, are we?" Jesse playfully rolled his eyes as they came to the end of the tunnel. There was a staircase leading down. "Alright, you hold a torch and I'll keep my sword out." Lukas handed Jesse a torch and began to walk down the staircase. Jesse stayed close behind him as the pitch black was slowly lit up. They got to the bottom of the staircase as an eerie noise came from the darkness.
"What is that?" Jesse asked.
"Just ambience. It's only there to scare us." Just as Lukas finished saying that, a zombie groan echoed throughout the cave. "Stay behind me." Lukas slowly walked forward into the cave as the zombie groaned again, this time seeming closer. Lukas took a few more steps, then a zombie stumbled out of the darkness. Lukas backed into Jesse, almost knocking him over, as the zombie took a swipe. Lukas breathed in before swinging his sword, decapitating the zombie.
"I'm... surprised that worked," Lukas said. Jesse chuckled.
"You're better at this than I expected you to be."
"Shut up," Lukas said, blushing. "Hey, there's iron over there. Keep watch while I get it." Lukas pulled out his pickaxe and began mining as Jesse watched his back.
"It's so dark. How'd you manage to do this on your own?" Jesse asked.
"Well, it wasn't easy. I got ambushed by zombies the first time I was in a cave, and after that I was too cautious to turn around and mine anything. That's why there's still so much iron around here," Lukas said as he mined the last piece. "Alright, that should be enough. Let's get out of here."Lukas stared in awe as Jesse stood there in his new armour.
"It looks really good on you," Lukas said. Jesse blushed a little.
"Can we go fight stuff now?" Lukas chuckled and rolled his eyes.
"It's almost night, ya know. Maybe tomorrow."
"Hmph. Fine," Jesse said, sitting on his bed.
"You might not wanna sleep in your armour. I learned that the hard way," Lukas said. Jesse chuckled and began taking his armour off.
"So, where are we headed tomorrow? Wanna find another cave?"
"Uh, we should probably just start with the jungle. Our weapons aren't the best and neither of us can fight that well, so I think we should be careful."
"Eh, I guess. We're totally going deeper at some point though." Lukas smiled at Jesse and looked out his window. Seeing his reflection reminded him of the drawing he found, and he considered bringing up that he'd seen it, until he heard quiet snoring behind him. He turned to see Jesse out cold with his chestplate still on. He chuckled and walked over, propping Jesse up before carefully slipping off the chestplate and placing it in a chest. He lay Jesse back down and pulled the blanket over him.
"G'night, doofus."
