Chapter Six: The First Day: Part 2

Whoa. That guy is smoking.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. I’ve been sitting here in class for no longer than five minutes but I’m already mooning over some poor, straight, clueless dude? Really?

But I’m not kidding. This guy is really, really good looking. He’s sitting right in front of me, bent over something. He’s wearing a simple outfit, a light grey t-shirt and jeans. Examining him earlier, he has this really interesting shade of blonde hair, like dirty blonde almost. And hazel eyes, sort of greenish brownish. He’s tall, not quite as tall as me, but built like an oak tree.

Sadly, he looks like a popular jock guy. I see girls whispering across the room and staring at him. Maybe he’s not really my type.

My mindless, over-caffeinated-homosexual-Rob thoughts are interrupted by the teacher, a young looking woman with long curly black hair with dyed blonde streaks, yelling at the class to shut up. I look up, eyes wide, and she’s staring straight at me.

“No sunglasses allowed at school, young man.” She snaps. Chairs turn. Everybody in my homeroom is staring.

My face feels hot as I quickly take my best friend’s bright pink shades off. I hear a few snorts and giggles. Great way to make a good first impression. Luckily everyone just goes back to what they’re doing when the teacher starts calling out attendance.

I slump back in my chair, sighing. I miss Taylor already.

Sooner or later, the bell rings and homeroom ends. Some students get up to go to other classes, and a few stay here because this is the Geometry room. I guess I’m one of those students, and the guy in front of me is too.

Okay, to be honest, I’m not much of a math whiz. While the teacher’s in the midst of explaining a formula, I take my chance and lean forward, tapping the cute guy on the shoulder.

His reaction is surprising. He totally tenses up and looks back at me, his eyes wide with what? Fear?

I can feel my eyebrows furrowing. I didn’t mean to scare him. “Hey man,” I say, smiling hopefully at him.

He looks at me like I’m crazy. In fact, he looks exactly like Taylor whenever someone tries to socialize with her.

“What do you want?” He asks. His voice is quiet.

“I was just...I...” I tap my fingers on the desk and look away. “I was wondering if you know where to find good lunch in the cafeteria?” I look back at him. What? Hey, I’m winging it.

The guy just looks confused. “You’re the new guy, right?”

I nod, smiling awkwardly again. He doesn’t smile back.

“Uh...they have a Subway. In the food court. If you like sandwiches. And eating fresh or whatever.”

I laugh at that. He just blinks and turns around.

I heave out a sigh. Why is this so hard?

I lean forward again. “What’s your name?” I ask, my voice a strained whisper.

He looks back, raising a golden-brown eyebrow. He probably just wants me to stop bugging him. Whoops.

“Nick. My...full name is Dominick. But you can call me Nick.” he says softly.

“Cool.” I grin. “I’m Robert. But you can call me Rob.”

Nick just sort of gives me a ‘don’t care’ look and turns back around.
