Chapter 39
I stared at myself in the mirror. It was my wedding day. It was the day every girl waited. It was the day that i would remember as one of the best days of my life. Most importantly, it was suppose to be the day i was happy. The day i should be ecstatic. I was meant to be getting married to the man of my dreams.
I took a deep breath and smoothed a crease in my white dress. I had worn my hair up with a few curls framing my face. Kayla had done my make up because my hand had been shaking. She had done it three times as i kept tearing up and smudged my make up. I kept telling her that i was just sad to leave them. But, she did not believe me. fortunately, she did not pry.
“Julia,” a voice called from the door.
I turned and saw my mother. She smiled at me. But, that smile disappeared when she saw my expression. Rushing to my side, she enveloped me in her arms. I had not realised i was crying again until my mother wiped my tears. She kissed my forehead and hugged me.
“You look beautiful,” she murmured.
I sniffed and forced a smile. “Thank you.”
“Are you sure you wanna do this?” she asked, concerned.
“Yes. I love him,” i replied, ignoring my heart which was frantically telling me that i was lying.
“I know.” The way she said it made it seem like she was not sure if that was a good or bad thing.
She brushed my hair and took out a blue slide. It was beautiful. The sapphires were arranged in a way that it looked like three flowers twining around a vine. The gems twinkled back at me. I tried to hold back the tears as my mother placed it in my hair. She smiled at me, encouraging.
“There. Something new and something blue,” she said, smiling.
“Thank you,” i murmured.
She brushed my hair then looked me in the eye. “It was a gift from Dave. You should be thanking him.”
I gasped.
My father entered then, looking handsome in a tuxedo. He hated that suit but now, he looked proud to be in it. He stood, stunned, for a moment when he saw me. After regaining his composure, he made his way to me and hugged me tight. I heard the ragged breath he took. When he pulled back to look at me, his eyes were watery.
“You look like a real princess,” he said proudly, grinning.
I smiled, unable to speak.
“I love you very much and your happiness is all that means to me. I wouldn’t have let you marry him if i was not sure that he was going to make you happy,” my father said, his voice soft and full of emotion. His hand reached out and wiped something from his eye. “Got something in my eye.”
When he left the room, my mother turned to me. “He’s just really proud of you, honey.”
I nodded and turned to the mirror, taking a deep breath. The only thing that prevented me from running was that Logan will be the one standing at the aisle. He would be the one i would walk to. For today and for days to come.
My mother came up behind me and pulled the veil over my pale face. i saw her hands were shaking. I realised it was me shaking when i lifted a glass of water and saw the water rippling. I clenched my hands into fists so my mother would not see it.
“Julia, all of your life, you’ve been doing things to make others happy. But, today, i don’t want you to care about everyone else. I want you to be happy. I want you to do something that you want,” my mother said, looking into my eyes.
