Elia knocked on the door before stepping into the house. Andy had just finished giving his pet dog, Roller a nice warm bath. He wrapped Roller in a towel and came out of the kitchen. Seeing her favourite girl at the doorway put a smile on his face.
"Elia!" he shouted. He had not seen her in six months. "So happy to see you," his warm welcome somewhat comforted the pain in her heart.
"Hey, good to see you." She glanced at the house and said, "Have you been renovating the house?"
"Yes, of course," he laughed as he sat on his favourite rocking chair out on the porch, and grabbed the hair dryer resting on the coffee table next to him. She stepped out to the porch and sat facing him.
The view of the ocean was magnificient.
"When will you stop destroying the house?" she shook her head. "It had always been beautiful."
"Well, I will stop when I am dead," he laughed again. "I want to make sure the house is perfect when I pass it to you."
Elia was struck by pain. Her heart was heavy. How could she tell him about her condition. The poor old man thinks that he will die first.
"So how long will you be staying here?" he asked while finishing up with Roller.
After some thinking and a long ponder over the calm ocean, she said, "Three months."
"What?" it was a shocking news to Andy. Elia would either stay for two days or a week, no more, no less.
"What about your job?" Something was wrong, he could sense it.
"I quit. I got a new offer though, I got a wedding contract here," she smiled, trying to hide the sorrow behind her eyes.
"Wedding contract?"
"Yes, three months. So, I thought..why not?"
"And after that?"
"Come on, Andy, you have your own farm. Can't you let me work there?"
Elia, I would love that, but you rejected my offer before, and do you remember what you had said to me?"
"Yes," she remembered. "I said that I can't work in a farm or live in this town because it's a different lifestyle. I prefer to keep myself busy all the time."
Exactly. Should I be worried?" he showed his concern.
"Nope, nothing to worry about. Let's just say, I think I have finally realised that it's time I stop and smell the roses."
Andy was not convinced, but he agreed to it. "Okay, did you bring enough clothes?"
"Actually, no. I was only planning to stay for two days, but since I got the offer, I think I need to head back to my house and get more clothes."
"How about I buy my little girl some new clothes?"
"What?"
"You never let me buy anything. Let me do this," he smiled as Roller jumped off from his lap. "Hmm?"
Elia didn't had the heart to say no. She just nodded with a smile.
"Great, get your things from the car and keep them in your room, we'll have lunch then go shopping. Shall we get our nails done?" he said with poise.
"Yes, we shall," she answered. There was no hope that moment, but there was happiness.
