"Mr. Parker?" A doctor asked.
Peter took a moment to compose himself before barely whispering, "that's me."
"Hi, I'm Doctor Buxton. Would you mind if we go in another room to talk?"
"Can they come?" Peter asked jerking his head in our direction.
"I don't see it being a problem." Doctor Buxton smiled sympathetically.
Still holding Peter's hand I followed him through the intricate hallways of the hospital as Dr. Buxton lead us to a private room. Peter and I sat down while dad stood behind us too anxious to be sitting still.
"Now Peter you are May's nephew correct?"
"Yeah I am." He answered shakily.
"Ok and you are her only living relative, is that correct?"
"Uh yeah. That's correct." Peter mumbled.
"Now Peter, there is no easy way to say this but I need to go over DNRs with you and how that process works. Do you know what I'm referring to?"
"Yeah, umm...dnr, do not resuscitate. It's that bad? She needs a DNR? I'm only a teenager, how am I supposed to make that decision!" Peter rambled freaking out.
"Parker calm down bud." Dad whispered putting his hands on Peter's shoulders.
"DO NOT TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!" Peter shouted clenching his hands into fists. The immediate regret was apparent on his face.
"Oh my god, I'm sorry. Mr. Stark I'm so so sorry. I don't know what happened." Peter was now sobbing in his seat.
"Would you give us a minute?" Dad asked and Dr. Buxton promptly left.
Dad moved in front of Peter's seat bending down to be eye level with him.
"Pete, look at me."
"I'm sorry." Peter wailed trying to wipe his face with his sleeves.
"Hey it's ok, it's ok Peter. I forgive you, no need to apologize."
"I yelled at you!" Peter cried.
"Peter it's ok. Come here."
Dad gently took Peter's hands and pulled him into a standing position immediately wrapping his arms around him. Peter sobbed harder if that was even possible as Dad just held him as tightly as possible.
"It's ok Pete, I've got you."
"I don't know what to do Tony."
"Pete I hate to say it but this is your decision. However I know for a fact that me, Jr, Calvin, and the entire rest of the team will help and support you no matter what your final decision is ok? If I could take this burden away from you I would kid. Nobody should have to make a decision like this, especially at your age."
"Am I a bad person if I sign the DNR?"
"No absolutely not Peter. Signing that document doesn't mean that you want anything bad to happen to May, what it means is that if the time comes and the doctors do everything they can humanely they will let her pass peacefully. She won't be in pain Peter."
"Can you get Dr. Buxton, I just want to get this over and be with May."
"Absolutely bud, Jr would you mind."
I grabbed Dr Buxton and he was back in the room in seconds. Peter informed him of his decision to sign the DNR and he sadly handed over the paperwork to Peter.
"This is never easy, but seeing a kid having to make this decision is even worse. I'm glad you have a support system Mr. Parker no matter the outcome."
