"Alpha, get your ass inside, now!" My roommate yelled from the apartment.
I looked down at the body. She was still alive, I was sure of it. But she was slowing me down drastically. The apartment was so close... just up the stairs. We could make it.
"I don't think she's gonna make it, bro." Shiron sighed. "We're all gonna die eventually. If you save her now, you're just gonna have to let her go later on."
Tears rose to my eyes as I heard a screech from down the hall. The Fallen had followed us into the building. I refused to ruin any chance she had to survive, and was going to take whatever means necessary to help her out.
I placed the woman gently on the ground and took the knife from my belt. If they wanted to finish her off, they had to go through me.
"Alpha...!" Shiron exclaimed.
"Let's dance, mother fuckers." I growled quietly as the Fallen appeared from around the corridor. They screeched menacingly as they rushed towards me.
I grinned and rushed towards them as well. When I was close enough to one, I ducked under its claws and slit it's neck. Shiron appeared and with a bat and whacked at another, literally beating the guts out of its head.
"C'mon, bro." He panted and turned back towards the apartment.
I nodded and threw the knife at another Fallen that had just appeared by the corridor. I made sure it had made contact with its target before turning back after Shiron. I quickly hauled the girl back over my shoulders and sprinted as quickly as I could up the stairs, despite how exhausted I was already from bringing the girl up the past two flights of stairs.
Shiron quickly slammed and bolted the door as I entered. I immediately placed the woman on the couch and started digging for the first aid kit.
"Are you out of your damn mind?!" My roommate shouted. "You could have died! Again, Alpha. When are you going to understand that you can't just go throwing your life on the line like that?!" He glared at me harshly.
I found the first aid kit and quickly went to work on the woman's wounds. "It's like you said, Shy. We're all gonna die anyways. I'd at least like to spend what's left of my life helping to preserve others." I had cleaned the wounds with rubbing alcohol and started applying the bandages. The woman moaned softly as I did.
He simply sighed, defeated and approached me. "Your heart's in the right place, but you gotta start thinking a little more before you do stunts like that." I grinned at that as he ruffled my hair. "What is she, anyways?"
"Awoken, I think." I replied. "There aren't many here on Earth, but I read that there's a whole society flourishing with them somewhere in the solar system."
"Are you sure she won't try to eat us when she wakes up?"
"She's not extraterrestrial, dude. She was probably once human like us, but being out in space so long just alters people like this, I guess." I had finished applying the bandages on her wounds.
She began to stir, but then calmed down when I put my hand on her shoulder reassuringly and hushed her a bit.
Bullet shots suddenly burst through the door.
"Fuck! There's more of them!" Shiron exclaimed angrily.
"They're... armed!?" I was awestruck. Where did they find those weapons?! They were supposed to be hidden underground for the army.
I ran to the kitchen and grabbed a chef's and butcher's knife, even though I knew I didn't stand a chance with armed Fallen. Just what the world needed...
