reading Native Guard

section one

poem after poem about her mother

her life and

her death and

all the lingering spots in between

it's strange

reading eloquently written

complicated structures and hidden subtleties about

a woman she loved and that

loved her

my own works are quite different

half-baked ideas and simplicities with

structure lost to the haste of a bustling, overworked mind

yes, it feels quite odd reading about

graveyard blues

a mother who was loved and lost

when i write because everything my mother

did to me is inside my chest

beating, scratching, crying to be let out

maybe that is why i don't write how she writes because

i will not

miss my mother when she is gone and there is

nothing very eloquent about that
