The sins of our past come to haunt us. They suffocate you until you can no longer breathe.
It all started when my mother came home from work. She was a busy woman. She worked all day and worked all night. I barely saw her. But tonight was different.
I was reading a book, when some one started banging on the door. "Alex!!! Open up!!"
My eyes shot toward the door, and I ran to it. It was my mother. I opened it and she ran in. She closed the door locking it. "Oh thank God, your safe!!" I furrowed my brow. Safe from what? I looked at her closely, her hair was in a messy bun and her fingers were shaking. I was curious as to why she was so frantic. She cupped my face in her hands. "We have to go...."
"Why?" I looked down at her hands, she had what looked like dirt under her finger nails. I looked closer... It had a rust color to it. Could that be blood?!
Why was she acting so weird. I looked to the clock, it was 11 P.M. She didn't get off until 12. "Mom, why are you off work early? Doesn't being the hospital receptionist work till 12?" She looked up to me. "Listen sweetie, we need to pack. I'll explain everything in the car."
I watched her walk in to her room. I went in to my room and started packing.
I did as she said. I didn't understand what was going on. My birthday was tomorrow.. Maybe she was trying to scare me, or maybe were going on a road trip.
It was still a bit weird, she was scaring me. To be honest I have never seen her so scared before.. Maybe she was a really good actress, and I never knew.
I got all my necessities, phone, clothes, tooth brush, tampax.
"Let's go." She said as I was staring at a picture of my dad. I put it in my pocket. I looked at my mirror, my reflection. I looked away and put my converses on. She followed me and we opened our apartment door and started walking to get outside. I was staring at the floor while walking. The floor was a red, as if once upon a time it was a vibrant red. But now has faded. I looked up. The brown and green walls, again were faded.
We finally got down stairs and out the door. But as soon as I stepped out of the apartment, I could feel eyes on me. I looked around and no one was outside. I looked behind me and my mother wasn't there! "Mom!!?" I was started to panic as if a lost child in an unknown place.
I heard footsteps nearby, I don't know why but I had to run. It was as if, some one was pushing me to run. So I ran down the street, and I still heard the pitter patter of footsteps. They were slow, not rapid like mine.
Whoever this was, was in no hurry. I ran down an alley and hid in the musty dark. My hands were shaking. My eyes weren't adjusting very well to the dark and I couldn't focus or calm my rapidly beating heart.
I stared ahead of me, as I dug my hands into the ground. I looked at the lamp post in the street. That was either going to be my haven or my demise. A long shadow came in to my view. And again I once heard the footsteps.
I don't know why but I started praying, for it to go away. I opened my eyes and the shadow turned down the alley. No, no, no, no! I closed my eyes again praying once more.
I opened them and the figure with yellow eyes stood in front of me. He breathed a steamy hot breath on my neck. I was trying not to cringe. And in one quick motion, my neck snapped!
I gasped for breath as I jumped up from reading my book. I breathed heavily and sighed relief! It was just a dream,.. Thank God.
Some one started banging on the door. "Alex!!! Open up!!" My throat was suddenly dry, and my heart was beating. I had the odd sense of
daja'vu...
