"What the hell!" I cursed once I saw the tail. I stared at it with a mix of awe and horror as it moved up and down.

Nya smiled at me. "Well done. Now come on, or we're going to be late." She exclaimed as she popped my prison bubble. I held his breath at first, before allowing myself  to take a breath. I could breathe normally underwater!

"This is crazy." I told myself as I swished my tail. "What are we going to be late for?" I asked Nya.

"For dinner with my mother. The queen wants to see you." Nya clarified as she took my hand in hers and led me out of the room.

Apparently swimming with a tail instead of legs felt a lot easier. In about two minutes of swimming with it, I think I got the hang of it. I didn't trust myself swimming on my own yet, so I kept ahold of Nya's hand as she led me towards the dining room.

Dining room may have been a too simple expression. We entered the room and it was huge! There was a long golden table in the middle with a various number of chairs for guests, each with patterned plates and cutlery. There was a band of merpeople playing a bunch of instruments I've never seen before. At the end of the table was a tall throne-like chair covered in shells like Nya's mirror. The seat was occupied by a woman who looked similar to Nya. She had long wavy black hair; deep brown eyes; a silver dress with lotus flowers across it and she wore a golden seashell crown with a sapphire crystal that sat in the centre.

Nya bowed to the lady, I followed her example. "Nya, Kai. . ." She said as we straightened with a genuine smile on her face. "Please,  join me for dinner." She gestured for us to sit either side of her. We swam to the table, I sat to the queen's left while Nya swam to sit on the right, opposite me. I smiled at our hostess politely as the chefs brought out a selection of food. I didn't feel like eating especially when I had no idea who these people (merfolk) were. "Can I ask my question now?" I asked impatiently. The queen nodded. "Who are you? Because I keep having this weird deja vu feeling like we know each other when realistically I don't have a clue who you are."

Nya put her hand to her forehead looking extremely fed up with this topic. "It's alright, Nya." The queen said gently before turning to look at me. "As for our names, I believe Nya has already introduced herself and my name is Maya." She paused taking a deep breath. "Kai, there is something we need to tell you."

"Okay, so tell me." I snapped.

"I'm your mother, Kai." Maya spoke so softly that it made it all the more harder to believe what she said.

I stared at them in shock. "No way. . . I was told that my parents abandoned me when I was younger!" I stood up quickly shaking my head.

"It's true, Kai. You have to believe what I say is true." Maya said as she tried to touch my hand.

I pulled my hand away from her. "Then why does it feel like you're lying to me?" I retorted.

"Kai, wait!" Maya called but I was already swimming away.

How can they make me think they're my family? I thought as I swam back to Nya's bedroom. After that talk I needed to be alone, without this tail! I slammed Nya's door shut and tried to make an air bubble for me to go inside. It took me several attempts before I finally made one big enough. I swam inside and thought about being human again as my shell necklace glowed changing my tail back into a pair of legs. When I got my legs back, I got my ninja gear back. I curled up into a ball, not sure whether to angry, upset or happy. I pulled the necklace off and threw it out of the bubble and into the corner. Now I didn't know who I could trust. Apart from my friends who are very far away. I looked towards the bookcase hoping that the angelfish was still there. It wasn't. I sighed hopelessly as someone knocked on the door.

"Kai?" Nya called through the door. "You in here?" She asked as she pushed the door open. I looked up at her as she swam in.

"If you're going to give me a speech about believing Maya, I'm not in the mood to hear it." I said harshly but I didn't care at this point.

"I came to see if you were alright." She corrected as she entered my bubble. It expanded to make room for the both of us. Nya changed into human form as she sat crossed-leg to my left. I turned away hoping she'd leave me alone. "You know, I would've acted the same way if some random stranger told me they were my mother." She said obviously trying to make me feel better.

"So why didn't you tell me about this?" I demanded.

"It wasn't my secret to tell." Nya responded gently placing her hand on my shoulder. I uncurled from my position and readjusted to a crossed-leg position and faced her.

"Then can you tell me why I have no memory of you or her? Surely she must've told you about me if you came and brought me to this place." I asked calming down slightly.

"It may take a while, but I'll tell you." She looked at me seriously "But before I do, can I show you something?"

I eyed her, suspicious that she was going to take me back to the queen one way or another. "Fine. But could you grab my shell necklace? It's over there." I pointed to her chest of drawers where I had launched it in frustration.

"Sure." Nya changed back into a mermaid and dove out of the bubble, retrieving my necklace. "Here you go." She said with a grin as she handed back my necklace. I switched into merman form again and burst the bubble.

I followed Nya out the door and down the hallway further. "Where are we going?" I asked her still ahead of me by inches. We stopped outside a door that said off limits in bright red letters that looked liked they'd been graffitied on. Nya's right hand glowed a faint blue as she waved her hand in front of the lock. Pushing the door open, I got a glimpse of what's inside. It looked like my room back home. Except, you know, underwater.

"This is your room." Nya said as we swam inside. "Mother had me make it to look like yours in the monastery. Do you like it?" She asked. I guess she was the one who entered my room while I was gone the day before. I concluded.

My face light up like a Christmas tree. It had everything and more. My favourite games were here as well as some new ones, a huge t.v. set (which somehow works underwater), a larger bed, my favourite movies were here as well as cupboards filled with junk food. "This is my room? I love it!" We swam towards my bed and sat down.

"Now will you tell me?" I asked.

"Yes..." She answered taking a deep breath. "It all started when our parent's first met..."
