When I went about my classes that day, I knew all too well what was coming after lunch. Yet, I feigned ignorance and played the innocent girl that everyone believed I was. It was never my intention to peek at the papers. They had just landed at my feet as I collided with their rightful owner, so I had no choice but to take a small glimpse. It all happened before homeroom and since then, I was trying my hardest to concentrate on other things. But, it was as if my stupid brain was stuck in a loop like a broken tape.
As I sat down in my third period, I couldn't help but glance at my rainbow colored wrist watch.
Two more classes, then lunch, and then at last—
"Hey, is everything okay?" My desk mate Ashley Aberdeen whispered, breaking my thought process.
"Yeah, why?" I whispered back, careful not to get caught by the physics teacher, Ms. Winifred. Being seated in the front, I hated talking during classes, as I got easily distracted. So, I didn't need external stimuli to get even more distracted.
More than that, I didn't want detention. Ms. Winifred was one of the few teachers who gave you detention if you made a single noise in the class.
And more than anyone else, I couldn't risk getting detention. It was more about my pride than my sanity, as detention was like slow poison for a Class Representative's reputation in our school.
"You've been looking at your watch for a while now, Sky." Ashley pointed at my watch with her thin eyebrows, tucking a loose blonde strand behind her ear.
"Haha, really? I guess I'm not in the mood to study today."
"Okay, but tell me if something's up."
"Yeah, sure." I nodded and she turned her attention towards the board again. I was barely able to focus on what I was writing in my notes when Ashley spoke up again.
"Wait, is this finally about a boy?"
This itch with a capital B.
I wanted to scream in her face that not everyone was as boy-crazy as her, people were gay. And I was people. But, I knew this was not the time nor place for my coming out of the closet.
"No, Ash. It's not that. I'm just hungry." I threw before directing my focus towards the board, getting a hum from Ashley. With the constant tick tick of my watch on my wrist, it became extremely difficult to force my attention to whatever Ms. Winifred was explaining about electric charges.
Still, I pretended to understand, nodding my head every now and then.
Before long, Ashley received a tap on the shoulder, and she turned swiftly, keeping an eye on Ms. Winifred. From the corner of my eye, I saw her take a piece of paper from her —not mine— dark-skinned friend adjacent to us, Venus Scottsdale.
"What's she saying?" I nudged Ashley in the ribs, earning a wince from her. She opened the note and looked over it quickly before stuffing it in the pocket of her navy blazer, biting back a smile.
Ugh, why did I even ask? I should've known that if my boy-crazy desk mate received a note from one of the popular girls —only among boys, it had to be a double-meaning joke or some overrated gossip about some intolerable guy.
Squeezing my eyes shut, I inhaled sharply and fixed my gaze on the white board where Ms. Winifred was drawing a circuit to show the flow of electrical charges. She asked a question randomly and I would've raised my hand if I had been paying attention. But since I wasn't, my archenemy Leah Salvatore beat me to it. I looked over my shoulder just in time to catch her smirking, running a hand through her short cropped hair.
I hated it when Leah had that look of superiority on her face. I wasn't able to sulk longer on that as the bell rang, and the small army of girls in the classroom filed out as if the lottery results were being announced.
By that time, I had forgotten all about what I was excited about since morning. I was walking side by side Ashley towards our lockers when I felt an arm around my shoulder, hugging me from behind.
"Slow down, lil' sky." Charlie chuckled quietly, matching my stride easily with her long legs. "You're not on the track right now."
To be honest, I didn't really like being called lil as it made me feel conscious of my height. But apparently, Charlie —as well as a lot more people— thought that was cute. Well, I could go with being considered cute anytime. I wasn't short, no. I was five feet, 1 inch and 3 quarters, which was just 5'2". So yeah, I wasn't short, everyone in my circle was just too tall.
"If we don't hurry we'll be late to class." I shrugged, smiling up at her.
"I wanna switch my English teacher, can we do that?" I looked to the side where Genevieve was pouting, looking through the bundle of paper in her hands.
"Why?" Ashley voiced the question everyone wanted to ask.
"Ms. Rose hates me."
"What makes you say that?" Charlie had fully turned towards Genevieve, hands on her shoulders.
"She shot down my essay for the term paper just because it wasn't too thought provoking." Genevieve's big doe eyes were filled with unshed tears.
Ever since I got know Genevieve, she'd always been like that, complaining and not seeing things from other people's perspectives. I remembered that I told her not to submit that essay as it didn't meet the requirements for the term paper. But she went ahead and submitted it, only to cry about it in the end.
Sighing softly, I left Ashley and Charlie to knock some sense into her as I padded towards my locker at the far end of the hallway —perks of having a surname beginning with Z. As I got rid of my Physics textbook, notebook and reference book, I heard a distinct laughter from the crowd around me, and turned on my heel at once.
If I could hear that laughter, then it meant SHE was here too.
My eyes scanned the ocean of girls before finally landing on the one girl who was the moon in my night sky, Hailey Taylor Kahn.
I watched as she replaced the books inside her black bag with some from her locker, balancing it on one of her knees, making her navy plaid skirt ride up her bare thigh. Just before she could shut her locker, something fell out from inside.
I wanted to rush to her and pick it up for her, but one of her friends beat me to it. My heart, as well as my cheeks, grew warm when she gave a small smile to the girl next to her, inviting a fond smile on my face too.
When she turned to leave, I spun around to face my locker. After a sudden thought, I looked over my shoulder to make sure no one saw me staring at Hailey. But to my despair, the girl standing just two lockers away from me had witnessed my gawking session.
I didn't need to be an expert to read the look on her face. It screamed that she knew. She knew and she was enjoying it.
Somebody unalive me, please!
