"Jayden! Over here!"
I looked up as I hear my name being called. Shawn was waving me over to the table he was sitting at as I walked into the cafeteria. Adjusting my black bag on my shoulder, I walked over to him and sat down. He was sitting with his new boyfriend Marcus and was smiling happily at me.
I smiled at him and felt my heart beat rapidly against my chest. It still hurt to see him smiling at me like that, knowing I could never have him. "Hey, guys, what's up?"
Shawn smiled and looked at Marcus lovingly, "Marcus and I were just talking about going to the movies tonight to see Avengers: Age of Ultron, want to go?"
I smiled and looked at Marcus while Shawn wasn't paying attention. Marcus glared at me and I looked down at the table, "Gee, Shawn, sounds like fun."
Shawn looked at me, his smiling instantly dropping from his face the moment he looked at me. He knew by the look on my face that I was going to bail on him...again. "Why now, Jay? Come on, we haven't hung out in a long time together. We used to be tight when we were in high school."
"I got to study, finals are coming up and I can't afford to lose focus. My parents said that if I failed out or dropped out again they wouldn't pay for college anymore. I really need to pass my exams," I lied as I fidgeted with the strap of my bag.
Shawn shook his head, "I don't get why you won't hang out with me anymore."
I shook my head before standing up, "You wouldn't understand, Shawn. I got to go, I got class in ten minutes and I need to talk to Mrs. Smith before class."
Shawn nodded as he looked down at the table top and started to play with the salt shaker, pouring salt onto the table in a circle, "Yeah, okay."
I playfully punched Shawn in the shoulder and smiled at him, which earned a glare from Marcus. I bit my lip before turning and walking away from the table, heading to class.
"Why won't you just come to the movies? Mike's joining and so isn't his girlfriend Jessie." Shawn was sitting on my bed swinging his sock covered feet.
I stared at his feet instead of looking at his face. His white socks had a small hole by his big toe, his tan skin showing through the hole. I shook my head, "I told you, I have to study."
Shawn shook his head as he stood up, gently putting his hands to my face and forcing me to look at him, "Jayden, you know you can tell me anything. What's wrong?"
I pulled away from Shawn and turned around facing away from him. I put my face in my hands and shook my head, "You wouldn't understand, Shawn."
"I would if you'd just tell me. You used to tell me anything, now you keep me at a distance."
Shawn gently put his hand on my shoulder and my body shivered. I shook my head and moved away from his touch, keeping my back to him. "You need to stop it, Shawn. You know why I can't hang out with you! You know!"
