It was a quiet night. The darkened sky shrouding the streets in shadow, lit only by the odd flickering lamp post. Along the street, a single window glowed. Two friends sat together, reading silently to themselves in the light. The only sound being the pages of stories as they were turned.
"Hey.... um." Lyn's voice trailing off. Lexi looked up from his open book. His eyes an emerald green, glistening where the light caught them.
"What's wrong Lyn?" His voice was cool and gentle just barely breaking the silence surrounding them. Lexi looked up, his eyes meeting Lyn's who was, very clearly, lost in thought. Her eyes staring blindly into space. There was a pause. Lyn shook her head as she returned to reality.
"Oh... Sorry," She giggled to herself, trying to hide the slight embarrassment filling her, "I was just wondering..." her voice faltering. Lexi cocked his head to the side and asked, "Wondering what?" now looking at her curious. Lyn looked up at him.
"Do you ever wish you could live in the stories you read..." Her eyes wondering off to the window in front of her, the sky a deep blue specked with stars. A silence grew as Lexi considered his answer.
"I suppose... I like to think that I'm beside the characters as they work through their adventures." His eyes dropped to the book in his hand, a slight smile forming. His hands traced the cover of the book ever so carefully.
"Why do you ask?" His voice soft and quiet. Lyn paused then looked back at him. Usure what response would be best.
"Well, I guess sometimes I am slightly envious of the lives the characters get to live." Her nervous eyes finally falling upon Lexi's. His gaze was kind and understanding. Lexi gestured for Lyn to come and sit beside him. Slowly, she shuffled over the corner that Lexi was sat in, resting her head upon his shoulder. No more words were spoken, for they were not needed. Slowly they both fell asleep, curled up in a green blanket Lexi had grabbed from his bed, its weight was soft and comforting.
The night reached its end as quickly as it came. The sun began to rise, filling the room with golden light. A little bird perched on the windowsill, chirping, and whistling gleefully as another day began. The sleepy pair jerked and twisted, as their peaceful rest came to an end. Lyn slowly opened her eyes, wincing at the blinding morning sun, raising her hands to block it. Beside her Lexi sat, still fast asleep. Lyn looked down both envious of his sleep and smiling at how peaceful he looked. Slowly she rose from her spot beside him and carefully replaced the blanket. Silently she checked to make sure she hadn't woken him and walked over to the window. The street below was still quiet with the occasional early riser on their way to work, or out for a jog. The people in the area were generally very friendly and would give her the odd wave or smile.
Lyn took a deep breath, the air felt cold and moist. Perhaps it had rained overnight. After a minute or so Lyn turned around and looked around the room. It was a small apartment with three smaller rooms. There was the bedroom with two beds for the both of them, a Bathroom and kitchen. It wasn't much but it was all Lyn could afford when they moved here, around a year or two ago. Not long after that, Lexi had come over saying that he needed a place to stay and offered to split the rent. They had been living together ever since. She took one more glance then walked off to get ready for the day.
I'm sorry for how terrible this is but I didn't think it's too back for my first published book. Hope you enjoy the rest :)
