The battered old chest in the attic always looked mysterious and according to grandma hadn't seen the light since the house was built. She made me promise to never go near it again. She should have known better.

Mum and dad had gone to America so they sent me to my grandparents' house. It's practically a palace.

I opened the door to the attic when a sense of longing hit me. I slowly crept towards the old chest caked in years' worth of dust and spider webs. I had to get it out of the attic. I pulled and pushed until my muscles were aching. I finally got it out. When I took a look at it under my bedroom light it was just as I thought, locked. I asked grandpa if I could borrow his tools and I am very sure he was surprised. It took hours. I couldn't open the lock. I thought about the trick my friend once used to open my diary, I only needed a hair pin. After several more hours I was called for dinner. I had a feeling that something unusual would happen the next day.
