" And you thought monsters didn't exist..," Amity gasped out, trying to comprehend what they had just witnessed.
Jacob looked at her and for the first time, she saw fear in his cold blue eyes. His dark brown hair was plastered to his head by the rain, his sweat, or a combination of the two. Dark circles from lack of rest were very apparent, even in the darkening room. Jacobs skin was slick and pale with a slight tinge of pink on his cheeks, as if he had a slight fever. Amity watched as began surveying the room they were in.
Outside the sun was beginning to set. The small house they ran into was becoming darker and darker with every passing minute. Neither dared to move too fast or even turn on a light out of fear. Whatever was out there, waiting in the dark, might hunt by sound or light. As they surveyed the entrance way of the home, a door was seen with a staircase going down into a basement. Before making their way to the stairs, Jacob locked the door as quietly as possible while Amity closed the curtains. Quietly, they began heading to the basement.
Once they had made it downstairs, Amity spoke again softly, " Lets close this door and turn on some light. I think we will be fine down here until we can figure something out." She shut the door and Jacob cautiously turned on his flashlight, looking around for anything that may be in the room with them. With light now on, they surveyed the room.
It was a small and damp space with very few furnishings, most likely used for storage at one point. In the room you could see an old writers desk sitting in a corner, covered in a thick layer of dust and cobwebs. The cleanest thing seen was an old, brown, leather couch sitting off to itself against a wall. The couch must have been put down here not long ago. Everything in the room smelled of must, mold, and mildew.
As Jacob sat down on the couch, he asked in a shaky voice, " What just happened up there? Why are people dropping dead like flies?!'' He looked considerably better than when they first came into the house. His color had begun coming back to his face, his hair had begun to dry. He just stared at Amity waiting for an answer that she didn't have.
" I don't know.. I told you monsters exist but this is nothing like I've ever seen..." Amity began trailing off, obviously very lost in thought. Amity was a monster expert. She had read every myth, legend, and tale. From people being killed by angry, vengeful gods to monsters from the depths of the sea dragging down ships. Amity studied them all, she had a fascination since childhood, but none of her stories talked of an unseen monster that caused people to bleed out in seconds.
Jacob stared at her in disbelief and began shouting, " You have to have SOME idea!! We just watched our closest friend seize up and bleed out from everywhere. They were dead in minutes! THINK, DAMN IT!"
" DON'T YOU THINK I'M TRYING?? I am wracking my brain, just shut up and let me think!" she shouted back, feeling extremely overwhelmed.
Amity sat down on the old couch and sighed, trying to think of anything remotely similar to what happened. She felt a heavy wave of exhaustion come over her and then she remembered something she saw just before they ran off to the house.
" Did you notice a sort of mist or fog coming out of their mouth and nose before they collapsed? Almost like they were exhaling smoke..?" she asked, turning to look at Jacob seated beside her.
He got a confused look and scrunched up his nose. " Are you trying to tell me you think... ghosts... are killing people?" Jacob prodded.
Amity put her head in her hands, shaking her no. As she went to push herself up from the couch, Jacob grabbed her arm to keep her there.
" Listen, I do not know okay? From what I saw it's like everyone took a cracked out blood thinner. My best guess is it's either a supernatural infection or a bio-weapon. It's literally like invisible death. " Amity exclaimed, utterly exhausted.
Invisible death. That is the chosen name given to whatever was killing the world. The name of the monster that no one had ever heard of. And to think people didn't think monsters actually existed.
