Percy and Grover had decided to go to Starbucks, since it had been some times since they went somewhere together.
"I'll take the espresso, what about you?"
"I don't know..." Percy hesitated.
"Well, I'll go find a table, so can you please order? Then you will have time to decide your drink."
Percy smiled at Grover. "Sure thing! By the way, Small, Medium or Large?"
"I'll take the Medium, thanks!" And then Grover walked to where the tables are, and Percy started to think about the beverage he wanted.
He knew that when he came with his mom here last year, he had taken his mom's advice and ordered an amazing drink, but he had forgotten the name. He tried to read the menu, but because of his dyslexia and the fact that the menu was far away, he couldn't read it. He thought of asking Grover, but he had waited 10 minutes already, and he didn't want to to go out of the line to wait even more again.
His turn arrived, against his wishes, and he still hadn't found what he wanted to drink. But deciding that he didn't want to make the people wait just because he couldn't decide, he decided to drink a cup of hot cocoa.
"What can I get you?" The cashier asked. She looked like she was bored beyond imagination.
"I - uh-" great job Percy, "I would like to order a medium sized espresso, and a medium size of hot cocoa please."
"There's no more cocoa," the cashier told him, in her monotone voice, "what else would you like to drink?"
Oh no, Percy thought, how am I going to order if I can't read the menu? He knew that he could ask an espresso as well, but he didn't like the taste of it.
"So?"
"I -um- I am dyslexic, and I -uh- can't read your menu?" The last part sounded more like a question due to the fact that his last words were barely a whisper because of the glare the cashier gave him. Sure, he wasn't afraid of monsters. But angry cashiers? Scary.
"So do you want me to read it for you then?" She asked, sarcasm dripping from her voice.
Okay. Sure, he could tolerate some cold cashier. But a disrespectful cashier that think that she is the queen of the world? No way.
But before he could tell the extremely disrespectful young lady that he was going to call her boss, a young woman came to his help and said to the cashier:
"Oh you can stop right now miss, I do not tolerate these types of service here. This young man is dyslexic, and it shouldn't be something to be ashamed of, and it certainly shouldn't be a tool for your bullying." She growled. The cashier looked taken aback, and Percy could swear that in her eyes he could see that she was scared.
"My father and my sister are dyslexic, and they always get stared at when they struggle to read. Well, enough! Enough of people discriminating because of their disabilities! So you, young lady will start by apologizing to this young man!" She shouted the last part, and Percy saw that there were plenty of people looking at them, and he also saw that Grover was trying, in vain, to approach Percy, but he couldn't move because of the people staring at them.
"Fine, I'll apologize," the cashier turned to look at Percy. "I am sorry." Her voice was still monotone, but at least she admitted her wrong doing.
The woman that defended him hummed in acceptance, and then she turned toward Percy and told him that she was sorry for making a scene.
She added "Do you want me to help you read the menu?"
"Uhhh-"
She seemed to take that as a yes, and started to read the menu for him. Grover was finally able to go through the people and apologized for not being able to help him.
"It's fine, man," Percy smiled, "plus, this young woman helped me." He turned back to her.
"Thank you so much for helping me and reading the menu for me," he thanked.
"Oh, no problem," she answered, "like I said, I got enough of people discriminated people for their disabilities. I'm Lola Martinez by the way."
"Thank you for helping my best friend, Lola. His name is Percy, and I'm Grover."
"Would you like to take a coffee with us?" Percy asked, "we should still have 15 minutes before we need to go, right Grover?"
"Yep," Grover nodded, "as long as there aren't... problems." He added the last part to imply the fact that they will have to leave if some monsters shows up.
"Great! Percy and I will command our coffee then!" And they started to wait in line, again.
When it was finally his turn to command, Percy realized. He still hadn't decided witch beverage he wanted to drink.
