PROLOGUE
Everyone had finally left the party and it was just Niall and I now, in our tree house we had built when he was 10, and I was 9. Our families, being close friends since back before I could even remember, had just thrown a mutual party. Tomorrow I would be moving to New York city to live with my grandmother, so I would be able to do more theater work. Tomorrow, Niall would be doing his televised audition for the popular show, the X Factor.
"Dude, this is the first year we aren't going to celebrate our birthdays together, huh?" Niall said to me.
See, Niall and I were a year apart… EXACTLY a year apart. And since the day he was the first to befriend me on the playground, we just clicked. We were practically inseparable, of course we made sure to celebrate our birthdays together. He was my best friend, and I was his. For a long time when we were younger, people genuinely thought we were twins at school, since I was a grade early, we were the same year for classes. Not till he started bleaching his hair, and I starting dying mine brown, did people think we weren't related. I guess the same dirty blonde hair and blue eyes showed similarity.
"I know… It's really sad. I don't know what I'm going to do!" I responded, playing with my fingers as I sat down on the wooden floor of the tree house.
"Me either…" Niall added as he stood looking up at the sky. He seemed anxious, and a bit nervous as well.
"You okay?" I asked, standing up, going to stand next to him.
When I was next to him, he put his arm around my shoulder like he did if he wanted to protect me from a creepy boy hitting on me.
"I don't know, Keely… I'm really nervous for tomorrow. I don't think I'll make it." He said.
I threw his arm off of me and pushed him jokingly.
"Nonsense! You're going to make it, and win it all!" I told him smiling with my eyes and expressing my heart.
He giggled and kicked his feet a tad.
"Things like that don't happen to kids from Mullingar, babe." He stifled, smiling a little, but also quite serious.
"So are you saying I can't star in a musical now? Or be on SNL with you one day? Hmmmm?" I joked with him, waiting for a response.
He laughed and threw his hands in the air when he said, "No no! See, you were born in New York, you didn't move out here till you were 5. It doesn't count."
I sighed and rubbed my forehead, it was always hard for me to convince Niall, but it was usually hard for him to convince me of things as well.
I then turned to my blonde headed friend and put both my hands on his shoulders and looked him dead in the eyes.
"You're going to make it. You're not just going to make it, but you're going to be one of the most successful boys in the world! Sadly, you will surpass me, but it's okay because you're my best friend and I love you." I said smiling at him.
"This is why you're my best friend, Kiki, you always have been my biggest fan." He informed me sweetly, using the nickname he gave me on the first day we met, since he originally thought my name was weird.
When I brought my hands back down he interlocked his right hand with my left, he did that on occasion when he was really happy, he was like my brother, so it was never that peculiar.
My iPod speaker started to play Remembering Sunday by All Time Low, as we looked out onto the night and joked about our future to come.
"…And you're going to win a Brit, and every girl in the world is going to want to make you their boyfriend…" I trailed off on my long list of success I believed Niall would accomplish.
"Wow, I don't know Keely, I mean, not every girl wants me like you do!" He said winking at me.
I then squeezed his hand tightly.
"Shut up, loser." I chuckled.
"Keeelyyyyyy! Time to go. Say good bye to Nialler and wish him luck one last time!" My mom shouted from the kitchen window.
I looked over at Niall's lost face, and my heart started beating faster. Who knows the next time I'd see my best friend. I hadn't truly processed it all until that moment.
I let go of his hand to whip a quiet tear off my face.
"Noooo Kiki don't cry!" He said, avoiding the casual drops making their way down his cheeks.
"I'm just going to miss you so much! I don't know how I'm going to make it without you, I suppose. Just, you're going to forget about me… and I hate that feeling…" I darted off, not looking him in the eyes.
He then put his hand on the side of my face, turning me to look at him.
"I won't go a day without thinking about you, trust me." He softly said.
I smiled then tackled him with a hug, he swung me around on our still stable tree house.
This was my last Horan hug for awhile… which really killed me.
"Come on Keely!" My mother yelled once more.
"Coming!!!" I shouted back.
Niall and I stood looking at each other for a moment, not knowing what to do now, or even how to say good bye.
"… Bye. I love you. And I have so much faith in you." I informed him, wrapping my arms around his waist, looking up a tad at him.
"I believe in you too, more than you know." He smiled down at me, different this time.
There was a closeness there with Niall just then, that I had never felt before. As our blue eyes met with each other with compassion and sadness, I felt a comfort with him, different then before.
Just then, I noticed Niall's eyes start to shut, an his lips part slightly.
I felt mine start to as well, and didn't question it.
Our heads moved a little closer through the emotions...
Right when I thought he was going to kiss me,
"Kiki!!!" My mom shouted, and we broke apart.
"I got to go, Niall." I grabbed my blue sweatshirt off the ground and stepped onto the ladder… forgetting my iPod.
Wow, I was going to miss him.
Our talks, after school jam sessions when we were supposed to do homework, making hilarious commentary during movies, embarrassing ourselves by being fun and carefree, the way he would pretend to be my boyfriend if I didn't like a guy, going on adventures, getting yelled at by our parents because they never truly understood our humor, eating everything, getting detention together, dancing under the moonlight because we could, wishing our hearts away, pouring out our hearts to each other… and just him.
He had been all I knew, for such a long time.
… Wait did I almost just kiss him?
When I was just about to walk into the the kitchen to leave for real, I looked up at my closest friend, waving at me in our treehouse.
"We'll see each other soon!" Niall informed me up above, smiling big and confident.
"I can't wait for that day!" I responded waving at him, giving the smile back.
I didn't know that "soon", meant a distant 2 years.
