I have no idea what I'm doing, you thought nervously as you climbed the steps slowly. I hope you know, goddess.
No response.
Options, once again, appeared in your head.
Politics
Economy
Culture
"Today, I would like to speak about... the culture of the Leijona Kingdom." You cleared your throat, trying to pass the small margin of time to bring up the next choices. Your vision started to blur as the light pink boxes of topics came into focus. A small meter on the right caught your eye, where a small heart rested on the bottom.
Choose the correct topics to clear the game! You must get 8-10 questions correct.
"Oh for fuck's sake..." you grumbled, looking at your options.
"This kingdom is known for their markets and is a desirable travel destination."
"This kingdom is known for their exceptional people and vast flatlands."
"This kingdom is known for their trade and commerce."
"This kingdom is rich with knowledge and research."
"This kingdom is known for their markets and is a desirable travel destination," you repeated. The bar rose slightly.
"The king and queen are very proud and never back down from a challenge, and they make many sound decisions."
"The king and queen are terrible rulers."
You repeated the first statement. Alex nodded with a smile in the distance.
"I believe that the Leijona kingdom is the best place to settle down because of its culture."
"I believe that the Leijona kingdom is not the best place to settle down because of its culture."
"I believe that the Leijona kingdom is the best place to tour."
It was, once again, the first statement that you repeated. Alex seemed to be getting more invested and excited as you kept talking. Quinn, stony-faced, was watching with calculating emerald eyes.
"Not only is the food delicious, but because of the imports from the four kingdoms that are outsourced from smaller businesses not only promotes the underdog, but also gives the people higher quality items."
"Backtracking to the food, meals are usually quite large and are made from local farms. These farms are quaint and peaceful, and I am lucky enough to not wake up from the hustle and bustle of the main attraction; the main plaza."
As you continued, you grew more and more aware of Quinn drilling two holes in your forehead due to his incessant stare.
When you finished, your knees felt like jelly. A screen with a You Won! popped up in comic sans and confetti which looked like it had been ripped off of a non-copyrighted YouTube video. You have to work on that victory screen, you thought with a small chuckle as you made your way down the stairs.
A hand grabbed your wrist from behind.
"Uh, Quinn?"
"Come with me."
You looked back at the princes, who were engaged in the next person's topic. "Quinn, you're hurting me..." you said, trying to tug yourself away from his grip.
He led you into an unoccupied room, releasing you to close and lock the door. "Why did you not speak about my kingdom?"
"Because I don't know anything about your kingdom. Why are you acting like this? Let me out right now, Quinn."
Is he supposed to be acting like this? you wondered, feeling your heart drop. He walked up to you with a heartbroken expression.
"I'm sorry for acting like this..."
"It's... it's okay," you answered, hoping you're saving yourself from a game over. "I'm just not familiar with anywhere outside of this kingdom. I'm not much of a traveler."
Quinn smiled at your response. "I would be happy to give you an... otherworldly experience," he said, trailing his finger up your arm.
You grabbed his wrist, jumping from the sudden contact. "Can we just... stick to hand-holding right now?"
He chuckled, lacing his long, ebony fingers with yours. "You're speaking like a virgin."
"I am a virgin," you replied almost automatically. "Thank you for noticing."
Quinn's face flushed as he unlocked the door. "Let's- let's head back," he said, "they're starting the next trial soon."
"Have you forgiven me?" you asked, squeezing his hand lightly.
"Your sweet words made me forget my anger, Little Bird."
"What? Little Bird?" You tilted your head slightly at his strange nickname.
"You're so carefree and sing so lovely- easy to cage and give all of my love to as well," he mused in a nonchalant tone. You shuddered at the thought of being imprisoned, but if it was with a man this fine...
"That's a little odd, but... thank you?"
"Would you like to give me a nickname?"
You thought for a second, but nothing came to mind. "I think 'Quinn' suits you well."
"There you guys are!" Joey yelled, spotting you walk in. He ran up to you with a smile, taking your hand excitedly. "Where were you?"
Quinn released your other hand as you made up an excuse that you were trying to find the bathroom and Quinn helped you because of your directionally challenged mind.
"It's the last trial," Joey said, not questioning your suspicious story. "You're the last one to choose someone to dance with!"
You eyed the paired crowd. A hand fell onto your shoulder as Quinn stepped up. "I'll be her partner."
"Is that allowed?" you asked.
"It is perfectly reasonable," he reassured you with a smile. "How good are you at your ballroom dance? It's a universal dance that every up-and-coming princess should know.
You laughed nervously, knowing that you were clumsier than a bear with ballerina shoes. "I'm not too sure about my dancing skills. You must be great."
He chuckled, covering his mouth with a closed hand. "I'm not as good as Damien, but I make do with my skills," he said, presenting his hand. "May I have this dance?"
You swallowed nervously, hoping that the game would, once again, take over this trial. You wouldn't mind a rhythm-game-like game, as long as you didn't have to use your brain to sync up with your feet.
"Are you alright?"
You took his hand, sweat racing down your back. "I would love to."
